It was not the best of homecomings for Jose Mourinho to Stamford Bridge as his Manchester United side were thrashed 4-0 by Chelsea on Sunday.
Thr defeat was the heaviest defeat for Mourinho in his Premier League career.
Super Eagles forward Victor Moses featured for Chelsea and was one of the outstanding players in the encounter, excelling in his righ wingback role..
Goals from Pedro Rodriguez, Gary Cahill, Eden Hazard and N’Golo Kante sealed the emphatic win for Chelsea.
The win moves Chelsea to fifth in the Premier League table, one point behind Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool who are first, second and third respectively, while United are seventh.
It was United’s third defeat of the season after losing to Manchester City and Watford.
It was also United’s eighth straight EPL game without a win against Chelsea.
Pedro got Chelsea off to the perfect start 30 seconds into the game connecting with Marcos Alonso’s long ball, rounding David De Gea before slotting into an empty net.
United reacted from the early setback and poured forward for the equaliser and almost drew level but Cesar Azpilicuerta cut out Jesse Lingard’s low cross.
In the eighth minute, Zlatan Ibrahimovic almost levelled the score but his back-post header from Antonio Valencia’s cross went inched over the bar.
Chelsea almost doubled their lead on 14 minutes but Eden Hazard’s low shot from Pedro’s swing cross from a corner narrowly went wide.
Cahill made it 2-0 to Chelsea on 21 minutes, smashing his shot from a corner against Danny Blind into the roof of the net.
Chelsea went close on 27 minutes after a sloppy play by Blind but De Gea’s stretched leg cut out Pedro’s intended cross to Diego Costa.
In the 29th minute Thibaut Courtois made two brilliant first from Ander Herrera’s long range strike before stopping Jesse Lingard’s goal-bound effort.
Chelsea were lucky not to have gone a man down as Davod Luiz only got a yellow card for a dangerous tackle on Maroune Fellaini.
Diego Costa had a chance to extend Chelsea’s lead in the dying minutes of the firs half from a free-kick but his shot was well blocked by Eric Bailly.
Prior to the start of the second half, United made their first change with Juan Mata replacing Fellaini.
In the 48th minute Costa thought he had scored Chelsea’s third goal but his effort was ruled for offside.
In the 52nd minute United were forced to a second change as Eric Bailly went off injured and was replaced by Marcos Rojo.
Courtois was called into action on 58 minutes parrying away Lingard’s long range strike.
Chelsea went 3-0 up in the 62nd minute through Hazard who hit a low drive past De Gea after a superb interchange of pass that involved Ngolo Kante and Nemaja Matic.
United made their final substitution on 65 minutes as Anthony Martial replaced Lingard.
Kante made it 4-0 to Chelsea in the 70th minute dribbling past Smalling before slotting past De Gea.
Minutes later Chelsea made their first change with Nathaniel Chaloba going in for Pedro.
In the 77th minute Chelsea made a double change with Hazard and Costa making way for Michy Batshuayi and Willian.
Ibrahimovic went close for United in the 81st minute calmly bringing down Valencia’s cross but was denied by Courtois who cleared away for a corner.
