Mourinho: I Can’t Promise UCL Ticket, Klopp Is Not My Friend

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has admitted that he cannot guarantee that the club will qualify for the Champions League next season.

The Premier League champions are 15th in the table going into their clash with Liverpool on Saturday.

When asked during his pre-match press conference on Friday if Chelsea can qualify for the Champions League still, he replied tersely: “I cannot promise.”

Mourinho refused to give any reasons for hos side's struggles this season.

He said: “If you read the papers you will know the reasons because every day it comes.

“My view is not important because the way you write is clearly the truth so there is no room for discussion. The truth is the truth. I think Chelsea is a big club, is the club that I chose to come to.

“It is the club that I live in a very specific way in the life of this club but with all the respect Liverpool is a big club, Manchester United is a super big club.

“Last season Liverpool won nothing and didn’t qualify for Champions League and they are still a big club and two years ago Manchester United didn’t even qualify for the Champions League, or Europa League and they are still a monster club.”

The Portuguese gave an injury update ahead of the clash.

“Courtois and Ivanovic are out and Pedro and Diego we will wait. The others are fine," he said.

“Pedro and Diego I am hopeful, if not I don’t take them to the hotel. It is always difficult for me to find the percentage (how fit)."

Mourinho added that he is "pleased" with Hazard's performance against Stoke, despite the Belgian's missed penalty.

He said: “I think it is not because he missed an important penalty I am going to be critical, he tried everything and had a positive game, tried for two hours, I am pleased with his performance.

“I am happy with his performance against Stoke. I was happy with his performance against Dynamo Kiev. Before that he was on the bench for a couple of matches.

“I was not happy and felt it was the best thing for him but I am happy with his positive reaction to that.”

Mourinho also stated that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is no close friend of his, although he says he likes the German a lot.
Both managers last met in the 2012/2013 UEFA Champions League group stage and semi-final when Mourinho was with Real Madrid and Klopp was in charge of Dortmund.

"I'm not a close friend of Jurgen Klopp's because football doesn't allow that, but he's a guy I like a lot."

Mourinho added that Chelsea will try to replicate last season's performance against the Reds where they took four points off them.

"We are going to try and play as well as we did last season against Liverpool," he said.
