Musa: England Match Will Boost Eagles Confidence, We Want To Avoid Defeat

By Bamidele Boluwaji:

Nigeria forward Ahmed Musa believes that Saturday’s World Cup build-up game against the Three Lions of England will boost the Super Eagles confidence ahead of the tournament in Russia, Complete Sports reports.

The Leicester City of England star, who is on loan to CSKA Moscow of Russia, says either a win or draw will be good for the Super Eagles to go into the World Cup.

“This game is not all about winning but to tune up for the World Cup,” the Super Eagles striker told Completesportsnigeria.com.

“A win or a draw will boost our confidence going to the World Cup, so we will play not to lose.”

Musa also reckoned that the Super Eagles and they have to give their best to make sure Nigerians are not disappointed on Saturday.

“It is a big game for us and we shall give it our best shot,” he added.

The match will be played at the Wembley Stadium on Saturday and Nigerians are already looking forward to a better performance from the team after their 1-1 home draw with DR Congo in Monday’s farewell match played in Port Harcourt.

  • Like Musa said, the mindset of “playing not to lose” will be vital for Nigeria on Saturday as nothing but an England victory at Wembley will be seeing as acceptable to England fans, Coach Gareth Southgate and his employers.

So, the Three Lions players will bring to bear their tactical discipline and individual brilliance to ensure that they give their fans at the stadium, in pubs and at home, what they expect to see – a resounding victory against the Super Eagles.

For Mikel and co to avoid defeat, I offer the 5 recommendations below:

1)Clip their wings: England are adept at utilising balls across the box 18 from any direction particularly the fullbacks. Ashley Young, Kyle Walker, Danny Rose and Trent Alexander-Arnold – all defenders – may not seem like attacking threats but their crosses will cause Eagles problems in transitioning from defence-to-attack. Rohr must develop strategies to neutralise killer crosses.

2)Don’t play high lines: In Jamie Vardy, Marcus Rashford and Raheem Sterling, England will be lethal in counter-attacks. These players will run behind the best defences in the world to deadly effects. Rohr’s Eagles must be defensively compact with wingers falling back regularly to help out with defensive duties.

3)Don’t switch off in set plays: The English national team practises optimum utilisation of various set play scenarios. Rohr’s Eagles should display maximum concentration always.

4)Defensive aerial prowess: Super Eagles defenders will be tested aerially. They have to be ready to neutralise threats of Harry Kane in the air.

5)Penalties: In players like Dele Alli, England have serial divers. Nigeria have to be mindful not to give away needless penalties.
