Paul Pogba scored his first senior Manchester United goal as they halted their recent poor run in the English Premier League following an emphatic 4-1 win against champions Leicester City at Old Trafford in Saturday’s lunch time kick-off.

Nigeria forward Ahmed Musa, who is in the Super Eagles squad to face Zambia in October and started for his club in the 4-2 English Football League Cup defeat to Chelsea in midweek, was not in the Leicester matchday squad.

Goals from Chris Smalling, Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford completed the rout.

Demarai Gray who came on for a disappointing Jamie Vardy got Leicester’s only goal.

The win lifted United to second in the league table temporarily while Leicester are currently 12th.

Daley Blind had United’s first attempt on goal in the fourth minute but fired over the bar.

In the seventh minute Mata’s cross found Zlatan Ibrahimovic whose volley sailed off target.

Leicester won a corner on 17 minutes but Robert Huth couldn’t direct his target towards goal.

United took the lead on 22 minutes through Smalling who powered in a header off Blind’s corner.

Three minutes later Rashford had a chance to double United’s lead off a counter but miscued his shot.

Ibrahimovic went close on 27 minutes only to see his brilliant effort just over the bar.

In the 30th minute Pogba fired a shot from 30 yards which goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler palmed away.

Mata doubled United’s lead on 37 minutes, beating Zieler with a powerful strike from inside the box after a clever move.

Rashford made it 3-0 for United in the 40th minute, tapping in Mata’s pin-point cross.

Just two minutes later United went 4-0 up with Pogba heading in Blind’s corner.

Prior to the start of the second half Leicester made double substitution with Andy King and Gray replacing Riyad Mahrez and Vardy respectively.

In the 55th minute Ibrahimovic teed up Mata who saw his strike blocked by a Leicester defender.

Leicester pulled a goal back in the 59th minute through Gray whose shot found the top corner.

In the 62nd minute Leicester made their final change with Jeffery Schlupp going in for Marc Albrighton.

Ibrahimovic almost extended United’s lead on 66 minutes off Jesse Lingard’s assist but Zieler tipped his effort around the post.

Two minutes later King failed to convert Schlupp’s pull-back.

In the 72nd minute Ander Herrera had a chance for United off Blind’s corner but fired over the bar from the edge of Leicester box.

Gray tried a shot from distance in the 77th minute but David De Gea made a good save.

A minute later United made their first change with Lingard going off for Michael Carrick.

United made their second substitution with Wayne Rooney replacing Rashford.

On 85 minutes Zieler did well enough to stop Ibrahimovic’s shot which evaded a sea of bodies.

And in the 87th minute United made their final change with Ashley Young replacing Mata.

  • This is disgraceful display by the Leicester CFC. I will be seriously considering my support for this team as I am seriously considering giving my support to Everton FC or ManCity. Liverpool and Tottenham are also in my radar. Leicester feel they will pick their points from the lower teams. They are really disappointingly annoying.
