NAIJA EURO SQUAD: 14 Nigerian Stars Set For UCL, Europa Action


Ahead of the UEFA Champions League and Europa League knockout clashes which take off on Tuesday, Completesportsnigeria.com's JAMES AGBEREBI reveals at how many Nigerian players are still in these competitions and how they've fared so far…

Alex Iwobi:


Barring injury, Alex Iwobi should be in contention in Arsenal's line-up that will face Bayern Munich in the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.


Iwobi has been a super regular for Arsenal in the Champions League this season, making six appearances, scoring one goal and providing an assist.


His only goal was against Basel on matchday 6, when Arsenal won 4-1 in Switzerland, while his assist was in a 1-1 away draw against Paris Saint-Germain.






Ahmed Musa:


Though yet to cement his place in Leicester City, Ahmed Musa has had his fair share of appearances in this season's UEFA Champions League for the Premier League champions.


Out of Leicester's six group games, Musa was in action in four fixtures.


But the former CSKA Moscow forward is yet to score for Leicester in Europe's elite competition.



Wilfred Ndidi:


Wilfred Ndidi only joined Leicester in the January transfer window from Belgian top side Genk.


But the gifted midfielder who has been a regular for Leicester since signing for them, should make his Champions League debut when the Foxes go away for the first leg against Sevilla next week Tuesday.







Kelechi Iheanacho:


This is definitely not the best of times for Kelechi Iheanacho as the youngster has been dropped in Manchester City's last five games.


The is however City's B squad for home-grown youth players as his place in the main squad was taken by new signing Gabriel Jesus.


Prior to being recently overlooked by Pep Guardiola, Iheanacho made three Champiins League appearances for Manchester City, bagging two goals.


He was on target in City's 4-0 home win against Borussia Monchengladbach before adding another goal in a 1-1 draw against Celtic.











Moses Simon:


One of the key players for his team, Moses Simon should be in contention for a place when Gent welcome Premier League heavyweights Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of the Europa League round of 16 tie.


Simon is yet to score for Gent in the Europa League this season after three appearances, he has however provided three assists so far.



William Troost-Ekong:


After spending time with Norwegian club Haugesund on loan, William Troost-Ekong returned to parent club Gent and has made only two appearances since his return.


Troost-Ekong will be hoping to get his first taste of Europa League action with Gent when Spurs come visiting.




Anderson Esiti:


Aside from Moses Simon, Anderson Esiti is another Nigerian player in Gent who has seen more action in the Europa League.


Esiti has made five appearances for Gent in the Europa League this campaign and could make it six if he gets to play against Spurs.




Rabiu Ibrahim:


The diminutive midfielder is not having the best of times at Gent presently having been overlooked for selection lately in the league and cup games.


Even in the Europa League, Ibrahim made only one start and was a substitute in two other games.





Samuel Kalu:


Samuel Kalu only joined Gent during the January transfer window from Slovakian club AS Trencin so is yet to make his Europa League bow.


But since joining Gent, Kalu has featured in four games.








Brown Ideye:


Greek champions Olympiakos will entertain Turkish club Osmanlispor in the first leg of the Europa League round of 16.


Expected to be in Olympiakos' starting line-up his Brown Ideye.


Ideye has had six outings for Olympiakos in the Europa League this season, netting one goal and getting one assist.


The former West Brom forward would hope to add to his solitary goal when Olympiakos face Osmanlispor.






Aminu Umar:


Among all the Nigerian players featuring in the Europa League, Aminu Umar has the most appearances (10).


The Rio 2016 Olympic bronze medal winner is also the highest scoring Nigerian player in the Europa with four goals.


And aside from his appearances and goals, Umar also has one assist to his name.







John Ogu:


A mainstay in Hapoel Beer Sheva's team, John Ogu should add to his five Europa League appearances when his team host Turkish giants Besiktas.


Despite being a regular for Hapoel in the Europa League, Ogu is yet to score a goal.




Anthony Nwakaeme:


Just like John Ogu, Anthony Nwakaeme has also made five appearances in the Europa League for Hapoel Be'er Sheva this season.


Unlike Ogu, Nwakaeme has scored one goal which was against Serie A giants Inter Milan which Hapoel won 3-2.








Fred Friday:


Nigerian forward Fred Friday should be in action for Dutch Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar who face Olympique Lyon.


Friday has seen action eight times for AZ Alkmaar in this season's Europa League.


He has also netted one goal so far for AZ Alkmaar in Europe's secone tier Cup competition.
