The Nigerian Basketball Federation have called up 14 players from the Kwese Premier Basketball League for camping ahead of the forthcoming 2017 Men’s AfroBasket tournament scheduled for 8 September 16 September in Senegal and Tunisia, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Completesportsnigeria.com gathered from the Secretary General of the NBBF Chimezie Asiegbu that the players are expected to report to camp on Wednesday.
Three players from Kano Pillars, two from Gombe Bulls and two players from Mark Mentors made the shortlist of 14 players.
The players invited are Abdul Yahaya – Kano Pillars, Dike Azuoma – Kano Pillars, Eli Abraham – Kano Pillars, Onyeka Okeke – Gombe Bulls, Yakubu Sylvanus – Gombe Bulls, Victor Anthony – Rivers Hoopers , Musa Usman – Mark Mentors, Echoibi Victor – Mark Mentors, Timothy Mudiaga – Hoops & Read.
Other players named in the squad are Joel Ejigba – Defenders, David Godwin – Kwara Falcons, Mojuba Oyeleye – Kwara Falcons, Daalu Egbejiogwu – Raptors Academy/Lagos City Stars and Ibrahim Olajuwon – Lagos Warriors.
Assistant coaches, AbdulRahaman Mohammed from Gombe Bulls and Adewunmi Aderemi of the Kwara Falconsto, will lead the team pending when the new coach Alex Nwora takes over the team.
Asiegbu also disclosed that the foreign-based players are expected to camp in the USA but Okapi Aalstar of Belgium guard, Benjamin Uzoh, has turned down the chance to represent Nigeria at the forthcoming 2017 AfroBasket.
The 29-year-old Uzoh, who played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s first-ever title triumph in 2015, however revealed that he remains open to future competition invitations.
