Ndidi, Iheanacho In Action, Iwobi Benched Arsenal Survive Leicester Scare

By Johnny Edward:
Nigeria midfielder Wilfred Ndidi started for Leicester City as Arsenal came back from 2-1 down to beat the Foxes 4-3 in a seven-goal thriller in the opening game of the English Premier League on Friday night, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

The Gunners playing without Nigerian forward Alex Iwobi, who was an unused substitute, got off the mark through their record summer signing Alexandre Lacazette who headed in Mohammed Elneny’s teasing cross in the fifth minute into the bottom-left corner.

But Leicester pulled one back through Shinji Okazaki who scored for the Foxes by outjumping Granit Xhaka to head home Harry Maguire’s cutback header for the Foxes’ first goal of the season.

Jamie Vardy made it 2-1 with an easy tap in the 29th minute but Danny Welbeck restored parity for the Gunners just before half time.

Vardy bagged his brace when he capitalised on another piece of poor defending from the home side to fire Leicester into the lead in the 56th minute to make the scores 3-2.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger made three changes as his side chased the game, bringing on Oliver Giroud for Rob Holding, Aaron Ramsey for Elneny, and Theo Walcot for Danny Welbeck.

The substitutions almost paid off as Ramsey was so close to restoring parity for the Gunners with his first touch, heading wide Hector Bellerin’s cross from the left flank in the 68th minute.

The Welshman however made his side’s pressure count after smashing in an equaliser in the 82nd minute for his side to level the scores at 3-3 for the third time in the encounter.

Leicester manager Craig Shakespeare gave new signing Kelechi Iheanacho his debut in place of midfielder Matty James for the last 10 minutes of the game but the Nigerian star failed to sparkle.

Giroud sealed the win with a thumping header five minutes from time to seal for the Gunners their first win of the new season.
