New Zealand Ref Conger, Familiar To Nigeria, To Handle Super Eagles Vs Iceland Clash

By Johnny Edward:

New Zealand referee, Matthew Conger, has been named the centre referee for Nigeria’s crucial Russia 2018 World Cup Group D clash against Iceland in Volvograd on Friday, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Conger will have his compatriot Simon Lount as his first Assistant Referee (AR1) and Tevita Makasini from Tonga as his second assistant referee (AR2).

Ricardo Montero from Costa Rica will be the fourth official while Hiroshi Yamauchi will be the reserve referee according to FIFA’s media channel.

Conger, born 11 October 1978 in Texas, USA, began refereeing in his native America as a teenager.

The 39-year-old was in charge of Nigeria’s game against Sweden at the Rio 2016 Olympics in Brazil which the Dream Team won 1-0 courtesy of a goal from Sadiq Umar.

He has also officiated at two under-20 FIFA World Cups, in New Zealand in 2015 and in South Korea in 2017.

If Ezenwa is used as you naively suggested, the goals surely will be 6 zero to Nigeria. Icelanders are the tallest players in the World right now. Ezenwa is the shortest goal-keeper in the team, playing against them will be the sweetest gift they can possibly have. Uzoho is 19 and 6.7′ and that was why he was so good and now he is highly rated. The 2 goals were not his fault in anyway. l hope l make myself clear.

I agree. Ezenwa would not be able to deal with those high balls. Handling set pieces would be a problem

Why should he drop Uzoho for Ezenwa? I see no sense in that. Uzoho is doing very well.

@ Osondu how is the two goal scored against us a goal keepers fault francies is doin very well and must be encouraged.

    • Guys I don’t really know again but Francis has conceded way more goals than Ezenwa has. I think Ezenwa has only conceded once or something like that. We may not see it but I think Ezenwa’s work is underrated. Watching Francis, I’ve noticed one elementary mistake he makes – punching the ball back into danger zone – he did it against Croatia, Czech and I think Poland. The same mistake Tunisia’s keeper made and was punished by Harry Kane. The coach knows the keepers, he sees them everyday so if Francis is better than Ezenwa the coach knows. However, personally, I prefer Ezenwa.

While I will not take anything from the quality of ezenwa, I don’t agree with you that Francis is doing bad. The young guy has performed even beyond my expectation and he can only keeps improving. You said he has conceeded more goals than ezenwa but you forget that he has also faced more quality opponents and top class players than ezenwa. Which a very important point to note

      • did watch Ezenwa during CHAN? Pls forget sentiments, he is not qualified to man our goal at such a global competition.

  • I hope he will not be a bad luck like the last referee whom they said he is been hospitalised now.

  • Rohr knows them better.
