Newey Admits Vettel Title A Long Shot

Red Bull’s chief technical officer Adrian Newey feels Sebastian Vettel will need help from Lewis Hamilton if he is to win the title. Hamilton’s superb victory in Singapore has seen the Mercedes flyer open up a 40-point lead at the top of the standings and he looks set to claim a fifth Formula 1 title in November.

Vettel is the only man capable of catching the British star but Newey believes that the Ferrari man is his own worst enemy at times.

“Sebastian works incredibly hard and hardly anyone is more self-critical than he is,” he told Germany’s Bild am Sonntag. “If he has a weakness, it’s that he can make stupid mistakes in the heat of the moment. If he leads he is almost unbeatable.

“But people deal with pressure differently. In the car, he is responsible not only for himself, but for the entire team.”

The teams are now off to Russia for the next Grand Prix and Newey feels Vettel will not be able to clinch the title unless Hamilton suffers problems.

“If he’s going to manage it, he needs at least one retirement from Lewis,” he added. “Otherwise it’s going to be damn hard.”
