NFF: Eagles In Top Spirit, Ready To Soar Vs Iceland, Argentina

The First Vice President of Nigeria Football Federation, Barrister Seyi Akinwunmi reiterated on Tuesday that the Super Eagles have put behind them the disappointment of defeat by Croatia and now ready to go for the maximum points in their remaining encounters in Group D at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Akinwunmi, also Chairman of the NFF Organizing Committee and Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association, told a gathering of the cream of Nigeria’s media representatives in Saint Petersburg that the NFF expected a match –winning performance from the three –time African champions against Iceland on Friday.

“Like all Nigerians back home, and like the team itself, the NFF was not happy with the loss to Croatia. But the Eagles have climbed that cloud now and ready to conquer. They have put behind them the defeat and looking ahead with determination to the remaining two games.

“I can confirm to you that the team is not lacking motivation in any way. Our agreement with them was that they would get their entire money for the group phase once they qualify; it is not a match-by-match basis. So, they are aware that if they win the remaining matches or just achieve the minimum to qualify from the group, they will still earn the money for all three matches.”

Akinwunmi praised Sports and Youth Development Minister, Barrister Solomon Dalung for rallying Nigerians behind the team and staying behind in Russia to support the team in the remaining matches.

“We cannot fully express our appreciation to the Sports Minister, who has called on Nigerians to keep supporting the team and personally expressed belief in the team’s ability to reach the knockout rounds. We still have him with us here in Russia and he will lead the delegation to the match against Iceland in Volgograd.

“The Sports Minister led a Federal Government to Russia and led the delegation to Kaliningrad for the first match. Alongside, the Nigeria Ambassador, Professor Steve Davies Ugbah, he called President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) to talk to the team before the match. Government support is total for the team, and motivation is huge, so they have no reason not to go all out on Friday.”

Barrister Dalung also greatly inspired the Eagles during the qualifying race, personally leading the delegation to the matches in Zambia and Cameroon and being also on ground in Uyo for all the home matches against Algeria, Cameroon and Zambia.

“It is now left for the team to go all out and give Nigerians joy by winning their remaining games,” Akinwunmi added.

He also disclosed that the Eagles will depart their Essentuki team base camp in the Stavropol region of Russia to Volgograd on Thursday, ahead of Friday evening’s clash.

Super Eagles should wake up from their slumber. They have to redeem themselves. They were just too timid. Senegal has made Africa proud by beating Poland with all their World Stars. We need to play with passion for Nigeria and not all these timid play and been afraid of opponent star players. Senegal has a team and played like a team and not as individual stars or players

I agree with you Tunde. I hope our coach was watching. I hope our players watched the game. Senegal showed passion and it paid off. Moses should watch Niang. He fought for every ball. The first goal came through him winning a duel with the polish right back. Ou players have to fight for every ball, be more creative and show passion.

That the NFF big men are still dreaming of Nigeria winning its next two games, and telling us the Super Eagles are in “high spirits” is sheer self-deceit, and a betrayal of the people of Nigeria. We have seen that our best is not good enough at the world stage.

The Super Eagles are to “soar high?” I think the NFF must stop mocking the players. The country has been seriously let down, and heads must roll at the NFF

  • Senegal just beat Poland with the same formation we used against them (poland) and against Croatia. Senegal learned from the game between 9ja and Poland and that really enabled them to beat the Poles today. I know people will say senegal showed more hunger and were tactically more discipline than we were. They never gave milik oe lewandoski and space, i barely saw both players in the game, only heard milik’s name once and it was when he missed that chance late in the 2nd half. Though we would like to fault the formation the coach utilized the players should get more of the stick than d coach imho. Again, I repeat if we had used that same formation, tactics, and players against Croatia and had won the match, we will be calling GR a genius and a master tactician. Failure is an orphan as d saying goes.

God bless 9ja and its people

@proudly 9ja, may God bless you for dis reasonable write-up posted. everyone around me has been faulting the SE and the coach for using a wrong formation coupled with misplacement of players at various positions….I was quick to reply them dat had the SE won d match with dat same gameplan, no wld complain……the deed has been done, buh I still don’t knw why passionate football fans are still crying over a spilled milk…..believe it or nt, The SE will qualify from their group.

  • The Nigerian Super Eagles play football, but not with the desired winning attitude. Start off every game singing the national anthem with a passion. Go out there and perform with a winning determination. We have a saying “Niger no dey carry last” Guys play like a team – we have all it takes to beat our opponents. We have skillful and talented team. The coach should have a presence; he is too timid. We want a coach that will be on the touch line inspiring the team to work harder in the field of play. He should play the right folks in the right position. Remove the current No. 9 for someone who really stricks. We can do this if the team will resolve to have the right mentality going into the second and third games. If not, it is another long wait for 4 or 8 years who knows.

Nothing good will come out of these guys. The head is sick so tell me how will d body not partake in the pains. we made a costly mistake to employe that coach.

  • Nothing can come out of SE as the team set up was fraud going to this WC. Uzoho,Apeyi, etc were all fraudulent inclusions as better players that merit  the call up were not given the opportunity to come talk less of showcasing their capability. Dele alampasu, dele ayyenugba , nwakali,USMAN muhammed, Eze,onyekuru, the player in usa wit timbers United  Adi, the brilliant game changer at the last CHAN faleye, and so on and on ; were not given any chance as if the team is there fathers name it bears. Pls play on Friday and crash out expectedly and other comment of the fraud involve in this wc team will filter out for sure just as it always filter out after every wc participation. God deliver nigeria.Amen

Everytime we have been hearing high spirit still we end up losing nff go and find new format. After iceland match we will be hearing play for pride it was a group of death… lol lmao

  • some people are now fighting NFF because they made a pronouncement that super eagles are in high spirit for Iceland match, i don’t know what they are expecting NFF to say, whether they are expecting NFF to say super eagle are in DULL spirit to face Iceland before they can be satisfied.
