–Award Night holds in New York on October 11

Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (GCFR); Dr. Mike Adenuga, chairman of Globacom and Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, amongst other notable personalities are to be honoured at this year’s Nigerian International Athletes Association (NIAA) Diaspora Award Night/Banquet to be held at the Laguardia Plaza Hotel East Elmhurst, New York on October 11.
Now in its 14th year, the annual event has become a reference point and it would be celebrated on the margins of Nigeria’s Independence Day celebration in New York City to honour outstanding Nigerians for their support to the activities of NIIA in development of grassroots sports.
In a release by the PRO of NIAA, Dr. Godwin Obasogie, this year’s event would start on a carnival note with a morning Parade on New York’s 2nd Avenue and ending in front of Nigeria House on 2nd avenue in downtown Manhattan.
“We really have to thank God for keeping us as we are looking forward to the next NIAA award night and banquet in October and this is going to be a big event because of the calibre of people we are going to honour this year,” declared Obasogie, a former Nigerian and African record holder in 110m Hurdles.
According to Obasogie, this year’s awardees have been carefully selected for their meritorious contribution to grassroots development amongst other things, adding that the NIAA would leave no unturned in celebrating the best of Nigerians.
“We are really happy that His Excellency, General Yakubu has graciously accepted to be one of our very special guests this year and I actually met him during his recent visit to the US.”
Others to be honoured this year include Professor Adebowale Adefuye, Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States; Ambassador Habib Baba Habu (Consulate General New York); Dr. Osaigbovo Ogbemudia, Dr. Awoture Eleyae, Hon. Ms Omorede Osifo, Mr. Segun Odegbami, Pa Iredia Osifo, Mr. Fatai Bello-Osagie, Mr. Christian Okoye, Dr. Osahon Ukponmwan and Chief Solomon Ogba-chairman of Athletics Federation of Nigeria(AFN).
“Everything is well on course and we can’t wait to have these distinguished Nigerians at the award/banquet night and it is going to be a grand occasion as we are lucky to have a lot of sponsor including Arik Airlines,” Obasogie affirmed.
