Nigeria’s women U-20 national team, the Falconets on Sunday defeated New Zealand 4-1 to advance to the semi-finals of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.
Asisat Oshoala scored a 1st minute goal and added a second in the 12th minute. She was however denied a hat trick in the course of the game as the officials deemed her third effort to have been from an offside position.
Uchechi Sunday scored within few seconds of making her 83rd minute bow in the game from the bench as she substituted Chinwendu Ihezuo.
The striker scored her second goal in the 90th minute barely a minute after New Zealand’s Emma Rolston scored her country’s consolation goal off a right-sided cross.
The Falconets enjoyed great possession of the ball and had a more coordinated outlook but New Zealand had their chances which the Nigerians foiled.
Nigeria have thus reached the last four of the World Cup in two successive campaigns at the World Cup after their 2012 feat.
The 2010 FIFA U-20 World Cup finalists who impressively have participated in all of the previous editions of the U20 Women’s World Cup since 2002 will play Korea DPR in the semi-finals of the game.
