NIGERIA 6-1 SOUTH AFRICA: Falcons Superior To Banyana In AWCON Clashes

The Super Falcons will meet Banyana Banyana of South Africa on Tuesday in the semi-final of this year's Africa Women's Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

 

For the fourth time, the Falcons will be facing South Africa in the semi-final of the tournament.

 

Ahead of the clash, Completesportsnigeria.com's JAMES AGBEREBI takes a look at how both teams have fared against each other in the AWCON since their first meeting in 2000…

  

NIGERIA 2-0 SOUTH AFRICA (FINAL: AWCON 2000)

 

The Super Falcons met Banyana Banyana for the first time at the Africa Women's Cup of Nations in the 2000 edition hosted by South Africa.

 

Both teams played all the way to the final with the Falcons winning 2-0 to claim their second straight African title.

 

The final was however abandoned due to crowd trouble when the Falcons scored their second goal but the trophy was later awarded to the Nigerian ladies.

 

NIGERIA 5-0 SOUTH AFRICA (SEMI-FINAL: AWCON 2002)

 

At the 2002 AWCON hosted by Nigeria, the Falcons finished second behind Ghana in group A and squared off against South Africa in the semi-final.

 

The Falcons went on to win 5-0 against South Africa to progress into their third straight final.

 

In the final, the Falcons avenged their group stage defeat to Ghana, winning 2-0 to emerge champions.

 

NIGERIA 2-0 SOUTH AFRICA (GROUP STAGE: AWCON 2006)

 

For the first time the Falcons and South Africa were drawn in the same group during the 2006 AWCON which Nigeria hosted.

 

Going into the last group game, the Falcons on six points, triumphed 2-0 against South Africa who also went into the game after winning their first two group games.

 

Both teams qualified for the semi-final with the Falcons going on to win the tournament.

 

NIGERIA 1-0 S/AFRICA (GROUP STAGE: AWCON 2008)

 

For the second time in the AWCON, the Falcons were in the same group alongside South Africa.

 

After drawing their first two group games, the Falcons needed an outright win against South Africa who had already qualified after winning two games.

 

The Falcons won 1-0 win and qualification into the semi-finals, but they finished in third place, the first time they would fail to win the tournament. Hosts Equatorial Guinea emerged surprise champions. 

 

NIGERIA 2-1 S/AFRICA (GROUP STAGE: AWCON 2010)

 

And for the third time, the Falcons and South Africa crossed path in the group stage this time in the 2010 AWCON held in South Africa.

 

A 2-1 win for the Falcons earned them qualification into the semi-final with a game to spare.

 

They made it to the final and beat Equatorial Guinea 4-2 to become champions for the sixth time.

 

S/AFRICA 1-0 NIGERIA (S/FINAL: AWCON 2012)

 

South Africa recorded their first ever victory against the Falcons following a 1-0 win in the semi-final of the 2012 edition in Equatorial Guinea.

 

The Falcons met Cameroon in the third place match and lost 1-0.

 

And in the final, South Africa were thrashed 4-0 by Equatorial Guinea who picked their second title.

 

 

NIGERIA 2-1 S/AFRICA ((S/FINAL: AWCON 2014)

 

At the 2014 AWCON in Namibia, the Falcons avenged their 2012 loss to South Africa with a 2-1 semi-final win.

 

In the final, the Falcons beat Cameroon 2-0 to land their seventh title.

 

The third place match was between Cote d'Ivoire and South Africa with the former winning 1-0.
