Nigeria Foes Iceland Blow Two-Goal Lead In Friendly Vs Ghana

By Adeboye Amosu:

One of Nigeria’s World Cup Group D foes Iceland were forced to a 2-2 by the Black Stars of  Ghana in their pre-World Cup friendly in Reykjavik on Thursday night, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

The hosts who will be making their first appearance at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia opened scoring through centre-back Kari Arnason in the sixth minute.

Ghana weathered the storm for a while but were unable to prevent Alfred Finnbogason from doubling the home team’s advantage five minutes before the break.

Finnbogason has now scored in two consecutive games for his side after opening scoring from the spot in the 3-2 defeat to Norway five days ago.

The Black Stars, without most of their big stars, rallied back in the second half and reduced the deficit in the 66th minute through Kasim Nuhu.

Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey got the equaliser three minutes from time.

Iceland will open their 2018 World Cup campaign against Argentina on June 16  and then face Nigeria four days later at the Volgograd Arena.

@Pablo9ja, @Kingmaker, @deo @others, Thank you guys. There was a time I was an unrepentant defender of the Super Eagles performances. I adopted the maxin “sink or swim” with the Super Eagles. Now I just sit back and enjoy the beautiful write-ups of these wonderful guys. They are right behind he Super Eagles. There are others who are ready for ‘dampen their spirit’ people like @Sunnyb, who are just here to abuse and criticise the Super Eagles and Gernot Rohr. Do we need such people at this stage of the Super Eagles’ preparation? No!!! This is the time to incite the team with commendations. Never forget, http://www.completesportsnigeria.com is a website relied upon to get the going on in Super Eagles. So everybody reads it. Africa reads it. The Super Eagles and Gernot Rohr read it. Negative and unsubstantiated comments can cause damage to the team’s spirit. Well done guys.

  • Friendly matches in my view are arranged and played to achieve 2

    1) To help a team prepare for a major tournament.
    2) To boost morale amongst players, fans and other stakeholders with positive results.

Brazil u-23 lost to Nigeria u-23 in a friendly en route winning the Olympic the 2016 Olympic gold medal in football.

Like Gernot Rohr said:”the results that matter are those that will be obtained in Russia”.

Morale is admittedly “mixed” but “resolve” is strong.

Iceland strategically selected Ghana – an Anglo-phone West African state with similar football style to Nigeria – for this friendly and I think they would have found the result heartwarming albeit ending in a draw.

If they think that this is a flavour of what to expect against Nigeria in Russia, they may just be in line for a rude awakening!

You guys are just being optimistic and patriotic. But truth be told, this super eagles team is indeed useless at the global stage. I pity anyone that expects them to achieve results in Russia. Them go chop our super eagles like fufu a la Emmanuel Eboue (his taunting of the eagles before our qfinal match in Afcon 2013 lol)

We lack quality players and to make matters worse, Rohr has suddenly become very rigid. How in the world would one explain his insistence on fielding the likes of Shehu, Ighalo, the utterly useless Idowu and yes, even Mikel (whom I see as a major problem in the team shape as he doesn’t want to fight for the team in midfield, preferring to be a passenger in the hole behind the striker. I’m with Onazi all the way on his calling out Mikel).

In a nutshell, our world cup situation can aptly be described as garbage in, garbage out. Rohr should go to Russia with all his luggage so he can catch a flight to Germany after the Argentina match. No need to come back to Nigeria!

Like I said in my previous comment, winning is not the main objective of friendly matches.I have been privileged to watch so many pre world cup friendly matches among world cup bound teams and I still maintain that the Super Eagles will definitely qualify from the group and set an unprecedented African record in Russia.

One hidden fact is that Rohr as a German has his killer world cup formation, starting eleven and tactics kept to himself. He doesn’t want to expose his team so much because our opponents are watching!

I agree with you, and this will shock football lovers, Nigeriawill be among the last two playing in the World Cup final.

  • 99% of nigerians critizing d Super eagles are those who tried n failed in their attempt to bribe d coaching crew to get their always good on paper players. Thz eagles will fly high. We lost 3-0 to togo in nigeria on our wsy to playing some of d most exciting football to win olympic gold.

Even if the SuperEagles fail to make it out of the group, we will take it as a learning curve for a young team. Of which I am absolutely certain that the SuperEagles will not lay low to any team in our group. I’m not sure Iceland has won more than one game in all their pre-worldcup friendlies, likewise Croatia. Argentina too haven’t fared better. All they can boast of is Messigentina.

I believe that the group is balanced and anyone can come out of the group. SuperEagles only needs to play to their strengths. Work on defending high balls and find the right mix of players that will be in the first 11. I’m cautiously optimistic, but I believe in my SuperEagles to deliver.

Of course we’re not going to win the WorldCup. However, we always produce an exciting team that always capture the imagination of the world at large. VAMOS ARRIBA SUPEREAGLES!!!!! #FLY LIKE AN EAGLE INTO THE FUTURE#

  • I believe in supereagles. I have always done that even when people don’t believe them. That was how 99 percent says that droagba team will beat nigeria except me,yet we went all the way to win the African cup of nation.Remember the super eagles started weak and went ahead to keep improving in every match before lifting the trouphy.I have done crazy things for super eagles in my own support by sowing seed of faith and even keep praying for them.Even in their ups and down.I will never give up on them.yes Argentina have beating us many times but there all be shock to Argentina if Nigeria beat them.who would have believe ursain bolt will be defeat as the fastest runner.
