Nigeria Rated Third Worst Team After First Round Of Matches

By Kayode Ogundare:

Following the lethargic 2-0 loss to Croatia in their opening game of the 2018 World Cup, the Super Eagles have been adjudged as the 29th best of the 32 teams participating at the World Cup after the first round of games.

British newspaper Daily Telegraph, in an appraisal of all the teams, rated Nigeria has only better than Saudi Arabia which lost the opening game of the competition 5-0 to host country Russia and debutants Panama who lost 3-0 to Belgium.

Of Nigeria’s listless performance, the paper wrote thusly: ” A horrible performance from a group of players who didn’t seem to grasp quite how important their opening game at the World Cup was. Whether the manager’s fault or those in green shirts, there was no urgency, no great surge to try and rescue a point, an isolated striker and full-backs who weren’t allowed to get forward. Nigeria should be so much better than this.”

Spain and Portugal, who played out an enthralling 3-3 draw came in first and second while Mexico, which defeated reigning champions Germany were rated third.

Brazil, who were held by Switzerland and England, late 2-1 winner over Tunisia round up the top five in the ratings.

Nigeria will play her second game on Friday against Iceland at the Volgograd Arena. Only an outright win can keep the Super Eagles hopes of staying in the competition alive.

Instead of putting our efforts towards playing good soccer, we were more concerned with parading the best outfit for the tournament.

  • At least England won their match. The paper may be wrong, they may not know our players talk less of who was played in wrong positions, but one thing they got right is that there was NO SENSE OF URGENCY ON THE PART OF SUPER EAGLES!!!

  • Edoman of New Jersey, USA. 3 years ago

Nigerians around the Planet saw the match and put the blame on the foot of the foreign couch Rohr. Now, who wouldn’t agree with the view of this Newspaper?.

We will loose the match tomorrow and get ready to go home after Argentina match to start preparing for the African Nations Cup in which we are already in deficit with a lose to South Africa which this very foreign couch had put us in. How bad can it be?

Of all the 6th Would Cups Nigeria have had the privileged to participated in, this is the best funded and supported by the coherent and efficient Federation yet, this current team will surely turn out to be the worst ever in our history. Think about that my people.

For the first time your comment is a thrash, sorry to say dat. Hw many times hv I read your comment? Always love to see the Edoman of new jersey’s comment because of your insight in analysing super eagle’s matter but y dis unpatriotic comment today, y did u suddenly change from your grt insight sir. I renounced your curse and I say the Eagles will win their next two matches against Iceland and Argentina. I wish I hv your number after that match I will call your. I remain a die hard Super Eagles fan comment the sweet time or sour time. I hv no other country. Tgrace

      • This is the kind of thing I love to read; Patriotism!

We can expect people from outside Nigeria to support Nigeria when we are Nigerians.

Go Naija! I support you till end!

Please German coach rohr, before its finally too late for nigeria and before the USUAL phrase of ‘MY YOUNG TEAM EXCUSE OR GOING BACK TO DRAWING BOARD OR WE WILL LEARN FROM OUR MISTAKES EXPLANATIONS. pls listen! Nigeria if at all must loss matches which is sometimes normal, we want to loss playing sexy and attacking with spirited effort by the whole TEAM. From time immemorial Nigeria strong point is the attack so we must utilize that options by making sure they score goals. If we must loss, we want to loss 5-3 or 5-4 against Nigeria like siasia teams to all tournaments impromptu. Coach rohr, our defence are usually no nonsense type of selected players like OKECHUKWU AND taribo west. Not your new found soft belle oyibo breed amateurs defenders even idowu included. Coach rohr please mikel obi is well established number 6 defensive midfielder and not the by force number 10 attacking midfielder! Coach Rohr please iwobi is a brought up number 10 midfielder and rarely also perform as a winger! Coach rohr please ighalo goal drought in super Eagles is alarmingly embarrassing and a disastrous goals return and so the world cup proper isn’t a place to have easy better good luck! Coach Rohr please iheanacho goals ratio for nigeria is LEGENDARY dating back from youth teams. Ighalo from youth team goals ratio are a calamitous record! Coach Rohr please Ahmed musa hardly even gets the business done because inconsistency and the thought of two pretty wives at a young age are his irresponsible greatest undoing. Imagine the bad luck wishes from a legitimate abandoned first wife because he decided to be husband to multiple women and expect soaring career to flourish? Common sense! Musa is not dependable! Hmmm coach Rohr please a certain Samuel kalu of Gent could have replaced simon and Nigeria retains that speed and skill but your so called scout went blind. Your scout missed the transition of the nwakalis BROTHERS and Nigeria now lack CREATIVITY. Ok to amaju PINNICH please remember Nigeria failed to qualify for two nations cup and another disastrous consequences world cup? Your job amaju is on the line truth by told. Let nobody say YOUNG team again because we left experience ideye and efe Ambrose at home. Players on form. Even Ejide nko? We are omerue defence partner at u17 level by name gbenga AROKOYO presently in Sweden? That guy was bloody good, Rabiu ibrahim nko our supposed new okocha!, and a couple of others talented Nigeria youthster who specially proved themselves BUT many are obviously in obscure countries and leagues because of Evil Agents. Where are NFF advisory committee set up to guard our future stars? Hmmm coach Rohr please those proven YOUNGSTERS could be fished out and get them fit and they will play better football. No transition for musa MOHAMMED, usman Mohammed, nwakali two creative directors; sadik USMAN last Olympic top goalscorer for us, ezekiel on loan to las palmas, sokori, ajayi, where is micheal babatunde very impressive at 2014 WORLD cup, dele Ajiboye should have been Nigeria number 1 by now based on transition and even alampasu! Where is sunday mba! Revelation under keshi nations cup triumph, these and many more special proven youth players. Fish them out train and oil their engine and they will kick and take tackles for Nigeria! Because talent na talent. Talent doesn’t die since they are still young. Mix THEM up with our present Ajebutter squard of course we can do destruction. Uzoho was upgraded and trained and his engine well oiled. Today Uzoho is number 1. Others can be fish out AND have their talents trained, oiled up and good to kill opponent. Amaju PINNICH over to you. to everyone Good luck against ICELAND.

  • This Super Eagles team in Russia might have turned out the best funded and supported by the Nigerian Football Federation since Nigeria’s participation in the World Cup, as somebody has contended in this Forum, but it is debatable whether it is the best prepared. I think the problem started with the hiring of Gernot Rohr, a man whose qualification for being hired is having coached the likes of Gabon and Niger Republic. Gabon and Niger Republic? you ask. It was all so obvious in the match against Croatia that this man is bungling, inept and has nothing to offer.
Clearly, the NFF were childish in hiring this man. I have over time always accused Amaju Pinnick of being childish in the handling of Super Eagles affairs dating back to the Stephen Keshi era and his handling of the Keshi matter. The Super Eagles team in Russia looks very much childish, together with their coach, and this is a clear reflection of the amateurism and childishness of Amaju Pinnick and his NFF, a man and a board that had earlier recruited the incompetent Sunday Oliseh for the Super Eagles and dubbed him ‘the Gardiola of Africa’ until he (Oliseh) failed woefully and so badly that he had to run away from his job.
Amaju Pinnick and this NFF will lead us to nowhere.

  • Where were you and why don’t you say this when the coach qualified us for this competition. You and the likes are our problems in this country. You sha want this man fire at all means?

    • Edoman 3 years ago

@tayo, you are still talking of qualifier matches when this very team is now regarded as the 3rd worst team in the World Cup after only one match. Wow.

Did you see Morocco vs Portugal match this morning. That is how to loose a match with your head high. If you didn’t see it, go to youtube and try to see the full match. Have a good day. tayo.

Best shaku shaku dancers tof the tournament, best outfits of the tournament, best talkative coach of the tournament, guys we did good. At least we won something. Lets continue to celebrate mediocrity, hopefully in sixty years Nigeria will get it right. After all the president and a state Governor just commissioned ordinary bus Stop.Patriotism means different meanings to different people. To some Abacha was a hero.

  • Wole Star 3 years ago

The problem with nff is black mentality and cut they do get from the contracting foreign coach , otherwise we would have known that Rohr does not have anything to offer even judging by the woeful results of the friendly matches played enroute world cup .
If Siasia is given 50% incentives of what is given the so called foreign coach you can imagine what siasia would do but thier hatred for the best coach in the land would not allow the nff think right

    • You may be right. Look at Senegal coached by their ganja man!

  • I have a fillng that eagles will suprise many people.

  • Sunnyb 3 years ago

Wole Star, you are so right my brother.

  • Confusion, ignorancy, mis-information, blinded patriotism….. all because of a world cup match! With this unbalanced team, immature players, inexperienced coach at the highest level? My little piece for everyone-:enjoy the world cup matches while it last! PEACE.

  • Mr vick 3 years ago

Nigeria are the most unique supporters in this world, gernort rorhr was once called a master tactician in this forum when the super eagles walked through our world cup qualifying group but today he is a villian, our super eagles with the same bunch of player were regarded as the world cup suprise package atleast by most nigerians and now the lost against croatia the are shit, how can a football fan of nigerian decent praise morrocco for not converting there numerous chances against iran and portugal, is better i lose the way nigeria lost there match than a wasteful and toothless arab team . Whole lot of plastic fans everywhere, God help nigeria and super eagles.
    #soar super eagles
    #the wing of african pride
#win or lose we stand with you

    • Nigeria does not have no fan base. What we have is a bunch of hopeless opportunists, who support only when the team is winning. They jump out so fast when losses occur. The one that kills me is how they’d pretend not to love watching Nigerian games, but inside, they’re diehards. What a shame. Nigerian fans are the biggest problem our football has. You can never tell where they stand. They’re now saying that Mikel had had 11 successful years at Chelsea. The same people that said he’d been destroyed by Morinho playing him at the defensive midfield role, had turned back to say it’s the best role for him, just because there was a defeat. They are not even suggesting he should be withdrawn to the defensive role to try out Iwobi in the center, but that he’s not good there at all, even when he was the anchor of the team in the qualifiers, playing the same role. Today you’re good, tomorrow you’re not. How can any team have a good performance with this kind of fans? I’m ashamed, honestly.

  • This British Paper got it spot on on our performance “an isolated striker” and “Full backs who weren’t allowed to get forward”… Rohr made these boys to deviate from our attacking style of football out of fear for rakitic and modric because they play for barcelona and real madrid respectively. And yet both those guys did not play anything special.. He made our boys feel inferior to croatia before sending them out there.. It’s well, HOPEFULLY they make corrections before friday but I won’t hold my breath…

  • If nigeria is the third worst team, then we are improving. But to my record, they are the first and the only worst team in the tournament.

  • Na waa oooh.I fear people with flesh.this same boys and the now so called coach were been celebrated some few months back.Amaju pinick enjoyed the praise of many on this platform.today they are been criticised. The same coach qualified us to the world cup with a game to spear.we shud not forget that we failed to qualify for two successive nations cup before he was appointed.let’s be careful how we use words.as far as am concernthe coaches players and the NFF board led by amaju pinnick has sth good to be said about them.let’s try and balance our reporting.

sentiments don’t play football, judging by the disappointing performance the super eagles displayed in their last match do u think they can beat the remaining 2 teams?…did u even watch the spirited performance of Iceland against Argentina?…no Nigerian wud want the super eagles to lose but we have to be objective and put sentiments aside.I totally agree with Edoman on his assertion bcos we had a lot of expectations for the team based on the support they got from the football federation.the fact that ur pessimistic about ur team qualifying for the next round does not make u unpatriotic, if that is the case then disparaging Edoman who is a Nigerian because of his views should also qualify u as being unpatriotic.

Of Nigeria’s listless performance, the paper wrote thusly: ” A horrible performance from a group of players who didn’t seem to grasp quite how important their opening game at the World Cup was. It couldn’t have been said any better. But GR insists he was spot on with his formation and all that….I hope he humbles himself and listen to the voice of reason before its too late. I’ve the likes of Mexico, Iceland, Iran and a few of the so-called underdogs play and i couldn’t help but wonder if our team can play with such grit, guts and gusto in this tournament…added to right selection and tactics by the coach. To loose a game is bad enough….but to loose in such a cowardly manner as we lost against croatia is hard to take. It is very un-nigerian to be cowardly in any thing….not to talk of in a football match.

  • Naija people!!! The way you do a thing is the way you do the rest.
All our problems in Nigeria are the same, wait for it… The problem is Nigerians.

Nobody loves the way we played, it was toothless, no urgency, no drive.

However, people cursing Super Eagles, calling the coach a saboteur and the likes shows how we are unpatriotic.

All hands up to people who constructively criticised and rendered good contributions.

    Till Friday!  Good luck! !

It is unfortunate people are writing trash just because of one match out of three. It is unfortunate that majority of the people in this country does not have faith in God and threw caution to the wind. Many Nigerians and Nigerians in diaspora are carnal and does not know when God is at work! God tested them and they have all failed. You put your trust in tactics, formation and star players and you are all disappointed. If Nigeria had won that first match, non of you will give glory to God but to coach and players. Repent and go back to God and Nigeria will come out victorious in the remaining two matches. Nigeria will get to the semi-finals. Don’t you all know that God rules in the affairs of men? Have you not heard? “WITH GOD ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE TO THEM THAT BELIEVES AND ARE CALLED FOR HIS PURPOSE” On your part just believe God in Christ Jesus. If God could not help the Super Eagles, no one can help not even the so call VAR. Congratulations the Super Eagles for defeating Icelandic and Argentine nations enroute to the Semi-finals 8n Jesus name. Stop trusting flesh for the arm of flesh will fail you. It is because you put ur trust in man and they failed you.

    • they most write such bcos the team had been provided for to the fullest. they should justify their involvement at the tourney.

  • I see this as constructive criticism (nothing about this trend is destructive), when you’re so patriotic and too passionate about a setting it’s a norm by nature to ‘cry out’, it’s merely an inherited act. Some times we might be too emotional about certain issues but it’s perfectly fine, slaying critics on the players and coaches is something very important for the team’s development, this is what brought us here.
So obviously, when you do ‘good’ effectively you certainly deserve praises, but when otherwise, it’s assured (good) you also get criticized even though / withstanding you’re still thesame person that once did good.(hence, those ignorantly opposing such motive is either being naive or hypocritical)…
    Peace lads.
