NIGERIA VS CAMEROON: Kayode Dropped, Akpeyi Retained; Mikel, Ighalo Recalled

By Johnny Edward:

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr is considering dropping Girona striker Kayode Olanrewaju for the crucial 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon in early September, Completesportnigeria.com reports.

A reliable source revealed to Completesportsnigeria.com that the former Nigeria U-17s and U-20s striker’s inactivity this new season could be the reason why he may miss out.

Kayode joined Manchester City last week and got loaned out immediately to LaLiga newcomers Girona, for whom he played only a few minutes in their season-opening draw with Atletico Madrid on Sunday.

Rohr will this week release a 28-man squad for the September 1 and September 4 clashes, with five of them on stand-by.

Also expected to miss out are Victor Osimhen, Maroof Yusuf and Kenneth Omeruo, who has been inactive as he awaits a decision on his next step at Chelsea.

The players expected in the squad include goalkeepers Dele Alampasu, Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Daniel Akpeyi, who was heavily blamed for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier home defeat to South Africa in June.

Other players are Tyronne Ebuehi, Leon Balogun, William Troost-Ekong, Elderson Echiejile, Shehu Abdulahi, Chidozie Awaziem, Odion Ighalo, Mikel Obi, Wilfred Ndidi, Oghenekaro Etebo, and John Ogu.

Anthony Nwakaeme, Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi are also expected to be in the squad.

Henry Onyekuru, Uche Agbo, Ifeanyi Ifeanyi, Ibrahim Alhassan are expected to be placed on stand-by.

Ever since Nigeria has been relegated Obafemi Martins to the zero level, the super eagles attack have been blunt. The truth still remain none of the strikers invited get the instinct of producing something out of nothing when the chip are down. Martins is well vast in experience…..

all due acknowledgments to obafemi martins…but for me d last time we had a sharpshooter was when AGHAWONDER JULIUS AGHAHOWA was active…for now Sadiq, osimhen and awoniyi should be groomed…whatever happened 2 success who in his formative years was an ideal #9…european coaches are killing d talents of our lads.
INFACt SADIQ CAN PERFORM @DIS LEVEL HOPE HE Hits form in torino and be injury free him and all our other players. IJN, AMEN

Why this keeper again..does it mean our coach never heard of austin ejide.?.that’s d only guy capable of given us what we need on that post.

  • Where is Victor Moses?

  • Seriously, we don’t really have dangerous strikers and good goalkeepers. I’m with those calling for the recall of Obafemi Martins. You can’t compare his goal instincts experience and ability to produce a goal out of nothing. Please, Akpeyi is not confident at all and doesn’t strike fear in the opposing strikers. Rhorh really made a mistake putting him in goal against South Africa. Don’t forget that is where he plays and they knew him well and how to beat him. That was a big tactical error on the technical bench. Why not recall Austin Ejide then? When Ike Shorunmu was number 1 and then retired in 2002, he handed over to number 2, Enyeama who went on to do well. Ejide was number 2 to Enyeama nah. How did Akpeyi even come into the future. And, like Rhorh, I also don’t really have confidence in Ezenwa for now. Even if you’re Barcelona and you don’t have a goalkeeper, you could be beaten by Brighton & Hove.

True talk Martins all the way the guy is still in form like Zlatan…. and we say no to Akpeyi replace him with Emmanuel Daniel.

  • And bikonu, where is Victor Moses. If that guy is not playing, God knows I won’t be watching that match. As far as I’m concerned, he’s our only striker for now. As at 2-3 years ago, once I see 3 or 4 players in the team, I am confident until Sunday Oliseh forced 2 of them to retire prematurely. They are EMMANUEL EMENIKE, VINCENT ENYEAMA & VICTOR MOSES. The others are learners beside them. If these 3 guys played SA, whether home or away, they will be spanked thoroughly.

My opinion Odion Ighalo not good enough, maybe Martins,we av been trying and trying and trying strikers to no avail,Emmanuel Daniel a good prospect on the goal post,he needs Super Eagles call, and let them stick,

To me I believe the coach is in the better position to handle the team and those he believes can make the country proud are shortlisted, may God give them the victory at the end of both legs on the road 1st and 4th in Jesus Name amen. UP SUPER EAGLES… go out and do it again. Best of luck.
