Nigeria’s Falconets on Wednesday thumped North Korea 6-2 to reach the final of the FIFA Women U-20 World Cup in Canada.
Peter Dedevbo’s girls went into the lead as early as the 2nd minute through Courtney Dike who scored her second goal in five games when she latched unto a through pass and rounded the Korean keeper K. Chol Ok to sweep home.
The goal-scoring job then fell to Asisat Oshoala who grabbed four goals in this game. The intelligent forward bore down at goal, side steps Ok in Korea goal and buries the ball home in the 24th minute. It was her fourth goal in five goals for the Nigerian team. At this time, it was Nigeria 2, North Korea 0 but that was not the end of the story.
R. Un Sim scored a brilliant goal in the 31st minute when she half volleyed a good cross which beat Sandra Chichi in Nigerian goal.
Uchechi Sunday volleyed home Nigeria’s third goal from Oshoala’s cross. It was Sunday’s first touch of the ball after her introduction into the game when she replaced Courtney Dike.
Oshoala was at it again in the 60th minute. The striker blasted home a cracking shot off a Loveth Ayila pass to score her fifth goal in five games. A this juncture, the Koreans must admittedly had given up as it was almost impossible to recover from the Nigerian destruction despite being presented with a scarce hope when they converted a 62nd minute penalty through J. So Yon.
Oshoala grabbed her last goal of the game when she ‘stole’ the ball from an absent-minded defender who was about to make a back pass to her goalkeeper in the 85th minute of the game.
The Falconets have now reached the final of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup for the second time after the feat achieved in 2010. The Nigerian side lost 2-0 to hosts, Germany on that occasion.
Nigeria will play the winner between Germany and France. Both European giants play at 12 midnight.
