By Johnny Edward:
FC IfeanyiUbah will be keen to avenge their matchday 1 defeat to Kano Pillars in Sunday's Nigerian Professional League clash in Nnewi, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
The Anambra Warriors, who are unbeaten in their last seven games winning five and drawing two, technically lost 3-0 to Kano Pillars at the start of the season.
Now IfeanyiUbah coach Yaw Preko says his side are looking forward to another victory when they face Kano Pillars on Sunday .
The Anambra Warriors handed a shock 3-0 home defeat to Shooting Stars last weekend and the former Ghanaian international is looking to build on the momentum when his side face the Kano outfit.
“The game with 3SC is now history and the joy we got as a result of that has been immeasurable. We have digested and savouref the victory and have started preparing for Kano Pillars,” Preko told Completesportsnigeria.com.
"I have said that for me, I will like to take the matches one after the other and knowing that we have the game with Pillars ahead of us, we must prepare very well and ensure that we get another win."
The Anambra Warriors are now fourth in the Nigeria Professional Football League table with 31 points from 20 games.
League leaders Plateau United will be out to inflict another defeat on bottom placed Remo Stars in Jos.
At the Akure Township Stadium, Gbenga Ogunbote will lead Enyimba of Aba against his former club Sunshine Stars. It is the fourth time the former Super Eagles assistant coach will lead an NPFL team against the Owena Whales who are 17th in the table with 24 points from 20 games, one point above relegation.
Enyimba will be hoping to make it three wins on the bounce after recording a double over Remo Stars.
In Uyo, the trio of Alhassan Ibrahim, Aremu Afeez and Ifeanyi Ifeanyi will not be available for selection on Sunday when Akwa United host ABS FC of Ilorin.
Abdu Maikaba's side who are unbeaten in their last four games will look to make it five games unbeaten despite missing their top scorer Alhassan who is currently in Super Eagles squad in France.
He is the second top scorer in the league with 10 goals in 17 matches, four goals behind MFM's Stephen Odey.
Former Wikki Tourists coach Maikaba believes the absence of the trio will not affect the chemistry of his side.
"Our top three players will not play against ABS on Sunday but that will not affect us in any way because we are a professional club with lot of quality players who are hungry to play. Some of them may even want to prove a point once they have the opportunity," he said.
"Alhassan, Aremu and Ifeanyi are top quality players any coach would love to have around in every match. But we have capable replacements in all the departments, so we will not miss them when we play ABS on Sunday."
In Minna, Lagos-based MFM FC and Niger Tornadoes will look to return to winning ways when both teams lock horns at the Bako Kontagora stadium. While MFM's winning run at the Agege Stadium ended with a 0-0 draw with Akwa United last Sunday, Tornadoes lost to Kano Pillars who ended their own losing streak of four games with a 1-0 win.
MFM on match day 1 defeated Niger Tornadoes 3-0 in the opening encounter of the 2016/2017 NPFL season. Three first half goals from Sikiru Olatunbosun, Stephen Odey and Adekunle Adegboyega were enough for the Olukoya Boys to record their first home win of the season against Niger Tornadoes.
MFM will also be without two of their influential players Sikiru Olatunbosun and Odey. Both players are away on national duties with the Super Eagles for the matches against Corsica and Togo.
Head coach Fidelis Ilechukwu assured the club’s fans that the team would not be carried away by their impressive results from the first stanza of the league.
In Markurdi, Lobi Stars will be targeting another victory when they host Shooting Stars at the Aper Aku Stadium. Lobi Stars defeated Sunshine Stars away by a lone goal and will be confident of a home win in this encounter.
In Maiduguri, River United face a daunting task of recording a point from their away trip to El Kanemi Warriors. The Warriors have not dropped points at home this season and are unbeaten in the last four years playing in front if their home fans.
In other fixtures, Nasarawa United will battle Wikki Tourists in Lafia while Gombe will be aiming for their seventh win of the campaign against Katsina United.
