Nwankwo: I’m Happy With The Opportunity To Vie For Spot In Super Eagles’ W/Cup Squad

By Adeboye Amosu:

Crotone of Italy forward, Simeon Nwankwo says he will prove he is worthy of a place in the Super Eagles following his surprise inclusion in the 30-man provisional list for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Completesportsnigeria. com reports.

Nwankwo, 26, and Kano Pillars striker, Junior Lokossa are the notable first-time call-ups in the list released by Nigeria head coach, Gernot Rohr on Monday who overlooked the likes of Brown Ideye, Junior Ajayi and Sadiq Umar.

The former Gil Vicente of Portugal player has earned rave reviews recently following his impressive performances for Crotone in the Italian Serie A.

He has scored seven goals in 22 league appearances for the club this season an improvement from the three he netted in 21 league games last term.

The striker however has a tough task in his hands as regards making the final 23 for the mundial with forwards, Odion Ighalo, Kelechi Iheanacho and Ahmed Musa all favoured to be on the plane to Russia.

“The last few days have been a good one for me, my club and family. I have received a lot of congratulatory messages on the invitation and I’m happy with the way things have turned out for me so far,” Nwankwo stated in an interview with Lagos based radio station, Brila Fm monitored by CSN.

“Playing at the World Cup is the dream of every player . This is an opportunity for me to showcase my talent and prove myself to the coaches.

“Already, we have some friendly matches lined up before the World Cup which is a big opportunity for every player to fight for a place in the team, especially those of us coming into the team for the first time

“I will give my best and see what happens at the end of the day.”

The Super Eagles are expected to begin preparation for Russia 2018 on May 22 in Uyo where they will train for a couple of days before proceeding to Port Harcourt for a friendly match against Democratic Republic of Congo on May 28.

The Three-time African champions will play in Group D in Russia along with Argentina, Croatia and Iceland.

The fairy tale of Nwankwo and Lokosa is a lesson for every young Nigerian. If you work hard, and with a bit of luck there will be positive results. Finally, I hope we won’t see “Simy” written at the back of his shirt instead of “Nwankwo.” Our players must be proud of their Nigerian names.

Lol! No Simy ooo! Nwankwo will be the preferred name on his back if he makes the final 23. He has since stated that the great Papillo was his role model. We will see what he’s made of in the friendly against DR Congo. That is the match which will determine the fate of most of the remaining 12 players. I believe the likes of Moses, Mikel, Balogun, Iwobi, Kelechi perhaps most of the proposed first 11 will not play that game. So it will be the final chance for most of the fringe players to stake a claim.

So what happened to Tammy Abraham? Nigeria was begging him, and now Rngland dumped him.

  • Tgrace 3 years ago

Tammy is a shame of his own Image. No matter what happened if he had opt to play for Nigeria he would be in the 30man list but am glad he turn us down that we may get a man called Nwankwo Someone who did not shine in the early period of the season but shine when he is highly needed for his country men. Shame to all that turn Nigeria down.

..The dude already know he isn’t going to make the final 23 man squad.

  • Djeniko 3 years ago

@Dave, do you mean Tammy Abraham or our new boy on the block Nwankwo Simeon? Anyways, if you mean Nwankwo, you are largely mistaken. This is a Nigerian who wants to play for Nigeria and he is only expressing his happiness. The final list will be 23 meaning only 7 will be dropped. So those 7 will be on standby in case anyone in injured or something. He has been given a chance, no matter how small it is, he says he is taking his chances. I don’t see any crime he has committed. Meanwhile we are short of real strikers. Ighalo Odion and Victor Moses will soon retire. This dude can just be the in-thing then. Abi? He has scored 7 goals in a league that is tough. It means that if he is in the Chinese league that is simple, he will also be scoring 4 goals in a match. I think so. So be happy with him and if he does well in the friendlies and in camp, you can never know, ‘Russia here we come’ will be the song for Nwankwo Somebody!!!!

  • Whatever happens, Rhor is going to Russia with 3 goal keepers, 7 defenders, 6 mildfielders & 7 forwards.
One defender & One midfielder as STANDBY.
Uzoho, Ezenwa, Shehu, Idowu, Ekong, Balogun, Mikel, Ndidi, Onazi, V.moses, Iwobi, Iheanacho, Moses S., Musa & Ighalo.
Best of luck to the remaining 8 that will the final cut.
    Up Super Eagles!!!;
    God bless Nigeria!

l pray this guy makes it to Russia. l won’t be surprised to see that he bench somebody who do not deserve to be on the field as a sticker but takes Rohr for granted. Playing in serial A in Italy is a big deal by any standard.
