Obi Eyes Russia 2018 World Cup Action With Super Eagles

By Johnny Edward:

Torino midfielder, Joel Obi, is targeting a recall to the Super Eagles ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia three years after he last featured for the team, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

While admitting that it will be tough breaking into the team with the calibre of players currently in the Super Eagles squad, the former Inter Milan and Parma player believes he has something to offer.

The 26 year old has netted thrice times in all competitions this season and provided five assists in the Italian Serie A.

“It’s good competition there (Super Eagles) and that’s what you want as a player,” Obi told Completesportsnigeria.com.‎

“It’s only normal to have one eye on the World Cup. Every Nigerian player will want to get into that squad, but it’s based on merit. So, you’ll have to play well for your club and I’m doing that.

“I’ll focus on doing that, and then if I get the opportunity to play, it would be a dream come true.”

Nigeria have been drawn in Group D and will face Croatia in at the Kaliningrad Stadium in their opening game on June 16th 2018, Iceland at the Volgograd Arena on June 22nd, and finally Argentina in their final group game on the 26th of June at the Saint Petersburg Stadium.

Obi believes the three time African champions stand a great chance of qualifying if they win their first game.

“We have a good team, but we need to build on our performance. All we need to do is to win our first game and we could be through to the next round.”

  • The guy good but nah injury player

  • This guy is good, if not for injuries, he could have be the best ever.

This is one guy that has grossly under-achieved in European football due to injury problems. I often say given a fair chance and an injury-free career, Joel will be in SE first 11, any day, any time. He doesn’t mark as hard as Ndidi, but he’s more technically sophisticated, possesses some nice range of passes and packs bullets in that left foot. He will bring very strong competition to our midfield if added to the team. I pray for an injury -free Series A campaign this season.

  • his better than both etebo nd agu

  • If he is fit for Russia come Next year June they should call him.I love this guy to play for Nigeria even better than Mikel if not for the cause of injuries. May God answer my prayer on him to be fit and be in form for the world cup in Russia

  • Strong guy,if he’s out of injury completely,he should be called back to super eagles,

  • We definitely need him in the Eagles team. He would make a great combination with Mikel in the center of the field.

If he maintain this form till next year the coach should invite him. He is a good player and he is still young so we need him.

  • It is never easy for a player to be going on a long term injuries in a foreign league like Italy and still gain first team shirt even when half fit. It happened when he was at inter Milan…still happening now. He’s the main reason why onazi is in d national team. Also the reason why we beat Argentina 4 : 1 in Abuja. I pray he is fit for world cup.

It a welcome one, Joel Obi is a quality player, experience, and he is currently in rich form which is a good reason for the coach to look toward his direction and invite him for the world cup. He is not new to the national team.he can quickly adapt to the new setting of the national team. He should be called in place of Mikel agu or oghenekaro etebo who have failed to impress recently.

Joel is my best midfielder so far. I pray for him to be injury free and invited by our impartial coach, so that he shows the stuff he is made off.

God him, help the coach and our country in this mundial.

I remember when we played Ghana in a friendly match in 2006 in London. Joel was super in that defensive midfield. His absence due to a long injury layoff brought in onazi. We need him in the 2018 world cup as a possible substitute for Mikel which we don’t frankly have at the moment. He can hold the ball, give killer passes, a good free kick shooter, try killer shots in the opponent’s goal post and could also replace either onazi or ndidi as the case may be. We should drop Mikel agu for Joel obi. We should also bring in a John ogu. Etebo should also be dropped.

Joel Obi was nowhere near the national team in 2006. He made his debut in 2011.
