O’Brien Targets St Leger Success With Kew Gardens

Trainer Aidan O’Brien has high hopes for Kew Gardens heading into the William Hill St Leger at Doncaster on Saturday week.

The three-year-old has been tipped by many to claim glory in the final Classic of the season, as he has already shown his quality by winning the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot and the Group One Grand Prix de Paris earlier this year.

Kew Gardens did come up short on his most recent run in the Great Voltigeur at York last month, eventually finishing third, but O’Brien has put that down to the 5lb penalty placed upon the Galileo colt and he still felt the horse benefited from the runout.

“I was delighted with Kew Gardens’ run (at York),” O’Brien said. “It was not ideal having a penalty, but we felt we had to have a run and we thought that was the perfect place to give him a prep.”

O’Brien is certainly confident regarding Kew Gardens’ chances heading into the St Leger and he believes the step back up to 14 furlongs will only benefit the Irish horse further.

“(Jockey) Ryan Moore was delighted with him and obviously he stays further,” O’Brien added. “We always thought Doncaster would suit and hopefully the ground will be nice there.”
