Odemwingie Hails Stoke’s Winning

PETER ODEMWINGIE believes that recapturing the winning mentality was the biggest positive to come from last night’s impressive 2-0 triumph over Spanish side Real Betis.

Goals from Erik Pieters and home debutant Bojan recorded the side their first pre-season victory, having picked up three draws and two defeats in their previous five friendly fixtures.

Whilst the Nigerian says that results aren’t the be all and end all at this time of the year, he feels that recording a victory will only aid the players as they prepare for the season opener against Aston Villa on Saturday week.

“It was a brilliant evening for us to be honest because it was important for us to get a win under our belts with the start of the season edging nearer,” the Nigerian international told Stoke City Player.

“It’s good to get that winning feel amongst us again, especially having produced some very good football too.

“A few of the lads got another 90 minutes in too which is also very important, and I thought they all came through the game well.

“We played some really nice football throughout the game and the reaction to that from the fans was incredibly positive.

“We are very happy with the way the game went, and as I said before, to get that winning mentality back amongst us, especially here at the Britannia Stadium, is hugely important.”

The former Cardiff frontman, who made an immediate impact in the Potteries following his January switch, became the first Stoke City player to net at the World Cup Finals when he dispatched past teammate Asmir Begovic in Brazil earlier in the summer.

“I was delighted to have been able to do that, not just for myself but also for the club,” he smiled.

“I was getting a lot of messages on twitter at the time from Stoke City fans, so that was really nice of them.

“For me though, one of my best memories of the World Cup was being out there and seeing my friends and people who are close to me, especially my teammate. For me that was the best moment of the World Cup.”

He added: “I haven’t given him (Begovic) any stick because he is a really good guy, and despite his disappointment he was pleased for me to have got the goal. He is a really good guy – a real professional.”
