BENIN vs NIGERIA 0-1 (8 November 1959)

Nigeria pipped Benin Republic (then known as Dahomey) 1-0 in the first leg of the preliminary rounds of the Kwame Nkrumah Cup in 1959 in Cotonou with Albert Onyeanwuna scoring for the Nigerian national team then known as the Red Devils due to their red shirts. The game was Benin’s first international match.

2. NIGERIA vs BENIN 10-1 (28 November 1959)

The return leg of the preliminary round of the Kwame Nkrumah Cup in 1959 in Lagos became Nigeria’s biggest win and Dahomey’s biggest defeat in international football as the Red Devils defeated their western neighbours 10-1 to qualify for the main tournament which Nigeria failed to attend.


Elkanah Onyeali (four), Abudu Buraimoh (two), Albert Onyeanwuna (two), Daniel Okwudili and Dejo Fayemi were the scorers in the emphatic win.

BENIN vs NIGERIA 1-1 (27 January)

The countries met in Cotonou in the first leg of the West Africa Zonal tournament qualifiers and it ended 1-1.

The Red Devils defeated Dahomey 4-1 in the second leg of the West Africa zonal tournament qualifiers in Lagos to advance.

The Green Eagles repeated the same performance in another international friendly against the Squirrels with a 7-0 defeat.

Nigeria were held to a 1-1 draw by Benin Republic in an international friendly in Port Novo.

Hosts Nigeria walloped Benin 5-0 in an international friendly in 1979, months before hosting and winning the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations.

Both countries played out a 1-1 draw in a West Africa Nations Cup game.

NIGERIA vs BENIN 3-0 (27 April 1991)

Nigeria and Benin were pooled in Group 4 alongside Ghana and Burkina Faso in the qualification for the 1992 Africa of Nations which Senegal hosted.
Benin hosted first the two-legged fixtures between both countries on 30 September 1990 with Ishaya Jatau scoring Nigeria’s goal in the 1-0 away win. The return leg at the Lagos National Stadium on 27 April 1991 ended 3-0 in Nigeria’s favour. 

NIGERIA vs BENIN 2-0 (2008 AFCON Group Stage)

Mikel Obi and Yakubu Aiyegbeni were on the scoresheet in Nigeria’s 2-0 win over Benin in the group stages of the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana.  Mali and Benin were eliminated from the AFCON while Nigeria and Cote d’ Ivoire advanced to the quarter-finals.

NIGERIA vs BENIN 1-0 (2010 AFCON Group Stage)

The Super Eagles of Nigeria defeated Benin 1-0 in their second Group C game of the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations game with Yakubu Aiyegbeni scoring a 42nd minute penalty. Egypt and Nigeria went to qualify from the group while Benin and Mozambique were eliminated from the AFCON.
The Eagles qualified for the AFCON where they were the third place finishers.
