Ogu: Mikel’s Absence Big Blow, But Eagles Will Cope Vs Seychelles

By Johnny Edward:

Super Eagles central midfielder, John Ogu, is confident that team will cope with the absence of their influential captain John Obi Mikel when they face the Pirates of Seychelles in Victoria on Saturday at the Linite Stadium, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Ogu is one of the 16 players called up from the 2018 FIFA World Cup squad who failed to reach the Round of 16 of the tournament in Russia. Mikel on his part misses out on the game due to an injury.

The Hapoel Beer Sheva midfielder admits that the game is a must win for the team having lost their opening tie to South Africa in Uyo 14 months ago.

“It’s a huge blow if the captain (Mikel) of the team isn’t available for such a crucial match, but we have players capable of filling the void,” the 30 year old told reporters in the team’s Savoy Hotel Resort and Spa in Victoria.

“We lost our first game so it’s imperative to win on Saturday to brighten our chances.”

“We are looking forward to the match as our opponents are relatively unknown. The fear of the unknown is what will motivate us to victory.”

The 30 year old who is also looking forward to his 20th cap for the Super Eagles notes that a massive win will be the icing on the cake for him.

Ogu made his debut for Nigeria on March 23, 2013 coming on for Victor Moses in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Kenya in Calabar.

Hmmmm. Here we go again! The second round of the Nations Cup Qualifiers is here. I want to believe in Ogu and the so-called optimism in camp but we should not forget what happened in the first round – home defeat for Eagles by South Africa of all team!

I dont want to be as optimistic as everyone and mu reason being that we didn’t have Mikel for the first game and we lost. Yes i know someone will say ‘a tree doesn’t make a forest’. I quite agree. But the question we should ask ourselves is WHAT HAPPENED TO THOSE WHO DEPUTISED FOR HIM? Onazi, as the captain of the day, was lost in the crowd.

He could not shoulder that responsibility. The captainship badge was too heavy and the shoes tooooo LARGE for his nimble footed feet. Now its happening again and Mikel is not on ground to orchestrate things. I hope Onazi or whoever is called to marshall the troop on the field will play his double-role better so we can all smile

Despite my above misgivings, i still believe in us to pull the win. Cheers!

Arnaut Groenveld danjuma was born in lagos about 21 yrs ago. He is a Dutch-Nigerian footballer who is currently plying trade in club brugge of Belgium. He has stated categorically that he wants to play for Nigerian national team at senior level.
I dnt know what super eagles scout is really scouting men!
Eviemuno donimic ejaria is really doing well in the colour of rangers of Scotland and he is a good and future replacement for Mikel in the national team.
Nigeria coaches needs to go meet those aforementioned players and work on how possible to cap them for us soon because they are good assets instead of chasing retired Victor moses.
Victor agali I hope you know your work as the super eagles scout o.

You are right @Abdul Andah. I do follow up Arnaut Danjuma as well and i can say he’s a very good player. Am surprised our Scout haven’t approached him yet even when the guy has declared his intention to play for Nigeria. The NFF should please make a move now.

  • Mr.Rohr I hope u will not delay. Make a move after the friendly match with liberia. Meet this guys. Danjuma, and Ejiara we need them in the super eagles

The loss to South Africa in the first match actually gave the clamour for mikel in the team some sort of verve. In my own candid opinion, mikel should be the one throwing in the towel not victor Moses. He has served his country and that we all appreciate. He is tired and does not really have any special input to the team anymore.okocha wasn’t as spent before he retired but he left even when his ever green ovation still blossomed. We need to bring out another playmaker from our array of talents both within and without
