By Johnny Edward: Commonwealth champion, Olympic medallist and Nigeria’s fastest woman Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor has stated that being a brand ambassador of FirstBank has helped her stay more focused on achieving her aims at the forthcoming Olympic Games in Brazil, Completesportsnigeria.com can report.
Okgbare who ran a personal best of 11.02 women’s 100m to win her seventh national title at the Olympic trials in Sapele, Delta State last weekend told Completesportsnigeria.com during a photo shoot at the FirstBank head office in Marina, Lagos on Wednesday that her overall target is to do well in the four events she will be participating in when the games begin on the 5th of August.
“My personal target is to do well overall. I have personal goals which I hope to achieve. Overall I want to do great,” she said.
“It’s an honour and a privilege being a brand ambassador for FirstBank and they have inspired me to stay focused in my career and my status as ambassador makes me want to do more.
“I have always been a big fan of FirstBank because with them I see trust I rely on them a lot and they offer so much stability which are some of the things that actually help me stay focused."
Okagbare who will participate in the women's 100m, 200m, long jump and the 4x100m relays at the Olympics with Team Nigeria also revealed that she remains unfazed by the timing her rivals have recorded in recent meets.
“I don’t think that should be my focus. They are running and I try not to bother myself about that because I have my own focus.”
Reigning African sprints queen Murielle Ahouré who holds a personal best of 10.78sec, Kerron Stewart, Murielle Ahouré, Elaine Thompson and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce who is hunting for an unprecedented third 100m Olympic crown are among her rivals in the 100m race in Rio and all have finished in better time than Okagbare so far this year.
But the former African 100m record holder is confident of achieving her targets at the Olympics with the support of FirstBank.
“If I worry about them then I don’t have anything I want to achieve. I really want to achieve something at the games and I’m not worried about the timing anyone runs. I focused on what Blessing Okagbare can do and achieve.”
Meanwhile FirstBank’s spokesperson, Folake Ani-Mumuney, said the Bank is pleased with the endorsement of Blessing as this is a further testament to its support for youth empowerment.
“We are particularly proud of Blessing’s feats in Africa and the globe at large and we were her proud promoters during the 2012 London Olympics. We are optimistic that this endorsement will inspire our youth towards the achievement of their dreams” she said.
