Okagbare Targets 200m, Long Jump Gold

Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare has revealed that she’s looking forward to the 200m and the long jump events after she stormed to victory in the final of the women’s 100 metres in a Commonwealth Games record time of 10.85secs erasing the 12-year record of 10.91 by Bahamas’ Debbie Ferguson set in Manchester 2002.

Okagbare, who won long jump silver and 200m bronze at the 2013 world championships expressed her delight setting a new season’s best.

“I am so excited right now a new season’s best and win. I’m happy I was able to put on a show.”

“I executed it and stayed patient like my coach said I should and after 70 metres it just felt easy.”

“I still have the 200m and the long jump and I’m looking forward to both of those events now.” she revealed shortly after her triumph in Glasgow.

The 25 year old sprint star joins countrywoman Mary Onyali (1994) as the only African women to win the blue-riband sprint at Commonwealth level.

At last year’s world championships in Moscow Okagbare claimed the silver medal in the 200m and the bronze in the long jump.
