Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare on Thursday night won the Women’s 200m gold of the Commonwealth Games.
Okagbare ran a time of 22.45 seconds ahead of England’s Jodie Williams who was second with a time of 22.50 seconds. Interestingly, Anyika Onuora with Nigerian background but representing England came 4th in the race.
There was double celebration for Team Nigeria on the tracks as Ese Brume also won gold in the Long Jump after three brilliant attempts of 6.43m, 6.39m and 6.56m, the latter proving to be
insurmountable for her competitors to reach.
Brume becomes the second Nigerian at the Commonwealth Games to win gold in the Long Jump after Funke Oshinaike’s golden leap in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1974.
In the Men’s 400m Hurdles final, Christian Morton running in Lane 2 was 5th with a time of 49.65. However his compatriot in the Women’s final event, Amaka Ogoegbunam was disqualified for running on the wrong lane.
