Former Nigeria skipper Austin Okocha has showered encomium on the Super Eagles for their spirited performance against Argentina in Porto Alegre on Wednesday.
Lionel Messi and Ahmed Musa scored braces for their respective sides as Argentina beat Nigeria 3-2 in a pulsating match and the former PSG star believes with a little concentration the Eagles would have nicked a point.
“First I have to give the Eagles a standing ovation for their performance against Argentina. Yes we criticized them for their poor performance in their opening game but all credit to Keshi and his entire coaching staff and the players for their attitude and professionalism,” he said.
“There have been issues regarding their attitudes towards the national team but they showed full commitment against Argentina.”
He also saluted Vincent Enyeama for his heroics during the encounter.
“It was a difficult call for him (Enyeama) because he was too far away from where he should have stayed but it’s Lionel Messi and he rarely misses from there.
“We need to keep our calm in crucial moments, avoid a little loss of concentration and that is what is still lacking in our football. We matched them.
“He has grown into one of the very best in the game. Since he made his debut when I was captain in 2002 he has become the main man in our team not just this tournament but since he made his debut in 2002.”
Okocha however requested that Avdija Vrsajevic been issued a Nigerian passport for his goal which killed off any fight back from the Iranians.
