Okocha: Super Eagles Must Step Up In Congo

— Warns that artificial turf is not good for football

Former Super Eagles skipper, Austin Jay Jay Okocha has urged Nigeria to step up their game in today’s AFCON 2015 qualifiers against Red Devils of Congo in Pointe Noire.

Worried about the state of football in the country, the former NFF technical committee member maintains that a win in Super Eagles last two games could put the country back in contention, but charges the players to deliver in Pointe Noire.

“We have to step up our game and grab the next six points to have a chance,” Okocha says.

Okocha also urges the world soccer governing body FIFA, to look into the use of astro pitches in African stadia, calling the Joseph Blatter-led board to do away with the system.

He stresses that playing on astro turf has dragged the game three steps backward in Africa, pointing out that most European countries no longer play on astro turf. He further urges FIFA to come up with a system aimed at helping African countries manage their grass pitches effectively.

“In my opinion, I think astro turf (artificial grass) is bad for football. It reduces the quality of the game. FIFA should look into it,” he reiterates.

Commenting on Nigeria’s AFCON 2015 clash with Red Devils, Okocha reaffirms  that Super Eagles must win their remaining two games to stand a chance of qualifying.
