Okpara: NFF Should Learn Lessons From AFCON

–Says preparation for 2017 edition should start now

Former Super Eagles defender Godwin Okpara has advised the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF to learn lessons from the ongoing African Cup of Nations despite not able to present a team at the tournament. The former France based ex-international who spoke to Complete Sports at the weekend said the FA should also see the disappointment of not qualifying for African Cup of Nations as a way forward for the team, saying Coach Stephen Keshi has not done badly in the team.

“There are lots of things we have seen at the ongoing African Cup of Nations which I will advise our football authority to learn from despite the fact that we did not qualify for the tournament. We should see the disappointment of not making it to Equatorial Guinea as a tonic to plan for the future”, says the former PSG defender.

“The football authority should also try as much as possible to get players that will be more committed to play for Nigeria, I remember when I was playing for the Super Eagles, we were well dedicated and the nations came first, if we can have players like that again, I think Nigerian football will get better.”

Okpara however called on the Nigeria Football Federation to design a programme now that will help the Super Eagles to begin preparation immediately for the 2017 African Cup of Nations which will be strictly followed.

“We should not be waiting until few days to a tournament before we start preparation, now that the current Nations Cup is on, the NFF should design a programme that will ensure they start preparation for the next edition now.

“Keshi has done well and I think he should be allowed to continue”, he concludes.
