Oliseh: Why Eagles Must Fly Again

In-coming Super Eagles head coach, Sunday Oliseh believes turning the fortunes of the Nigerian national team from its sorry state of late to the enviable height of 1994 is a mission that must be accomplished.

Oliseh will be unveiled on Wednesday in Abuja as the successor to Stephen Keshi who was relieved of his job penultimate weekend but the former Nigeria defensive midfielder says in an article he wrote on his website, SundayOliseh.tv the state of the Super Eagles “is of paramount importance to the development of our youths and local football and its fortunes has a multiplier effect on the nation’s football.”

He believes if the Eagles start achieving results again it will encourage foreign clubs to buy more players from the national team and the local leagues.

“This action at the same time makes available hard currency to our people, clubs and eventually permeates youth development. It will trickle down from the top.

“Before Our 1994 explosion, we had most of our national team players and professionals (footballers) plying their trade in Belgium. After our 1994 brilliant performance at the World Cup’ Clubs came buying from everywhere. Holland, France, Italy, Germany just to name a few, and hence started the exodus of Nigerian players and at the same time, the consequential improvement and uplifting of our nation as a world soccer force to be reckoned with,” wrote Oliseh.

Oliseh further highlighted some of the steps that need to be taken to restore the fortunes of the team.He believes a viable local league is a sine qua non for the transformation of the team.

He also harped on the need to have quality people get into position of authority such that those going into the Nigeria Football Federation must see their task as one of career development and service to Nigeria and not one to enrich themselves.

Oliseh also believe getting the Super Eagles to play in a specific venue will help in the transformation plan.

“We need to fix and maintain a fixed venue for the national team games like the Wembley Stadium is to the English national team, the Three Lions. That way our players can feel at home on these pitches and not have to discover the state of the pitches same time as their opponents,” he wrote in the article.
