The shocking death of Shuaibu Amodu on Saturday has left several prominent Nigerian football personalities devastated.
Former Nigeria coach Amodu, 58, died in his sleep in the early hours of Saturday after reportedly complaining of chest pains the previous night, just three days after his former assistant Stephen Keshi passed on.
Sunday Oliseh, who played as Nigeria captain under Amodu, expressed shock and sorrow upon learning of the former BCC Lions coach.
"Waking up to another devastating horrible news: Amodu Shuaibu, former coach of Nigeria, is proclaimed dead! 1st Keshi & now this.God help us!" Oliseh wrote on Twitter moments after Amodu's death became public knowledge.
Joseph Yobo, who also played under Amodu for the Super Eagles, was also shocked by Amodu's passing.
"My hearts bleeds," Yobo tweeted. "Shuaibu Amodu gone. Rest in peace, Coach. What is happening to us? #RIPAmodu."
According to the Nigeria Football Federation, the Chairman of the Edo State Football Association, Mr. Frank Ilaboya, said that he had been informed by the Edo State Commissioner for Information, Kassim Afegbua, that the remains of Amodu had been deposited at the Stella Obasanjo Hospital in Benin City, incidentally the same facility where Keshi’s remains are kept.
The usually loquacious NFF President Amaju Pinnick could not say much about Amodu's death, as he was apparently still in shock.
“This is another tragedy too many," Pinnick said in an NFF press release made available to Completesportsnigeria.com. "We are still talking about Keshi’s death, and now Amodu is gone. I’m short of words.
"Amodu’s name was synonymous with the Super Eagles. You can’t talk about the history of Super Eagles without Amodu getting prominent chapters.”
NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, who was on his way to Amodu’s home-town Okpelle for the burial on Saturday, toldthenff.com: “This is most shocking. We are yet to recover from the death of Stephen Keshi.”Copyright © 2020 Completesports.com All rights reserved.
