Omeruo Celebrates Leganes Draw Vs Atletico Madrid

By Adeboye Amosu

Super Eagles defender, Kenneth Omeruo, is delighted to see his Spanish club, Leganes earn a share of spoils against title hopefuls Atletico Madrid in their LaLiga clash on Saturday, reports Completesportsnigeria. com.
Guido Carrillo’s netted a late equaliser for the hosts to cancel out Antoine Griezmann’s goal, a 30-yard free-kick which curled
straight into the net.

Griezmann should have restored Diego Simeone’s men lead in stoppage time, but he fired over from Filipe Luis’ cut-back and Atletico were consigned to stalemate.

The draw prevented Atletico Madrid who were without Diego Godin, Koke and Diego Costa due to muscular problems from going top of LaLiga.

Omeruo, who is loan at Leganes from English Premier League club, Chelsea and has expressed his intention of staying permanently with Manuel Pellegrino’s side played the entire 90 minutes of the game.

“Tough game against a good side. #cdleganes 1-1 #atleticomadrid,” reads a tweet on his Twitter handle.
Omeruo has made five appearances in all competitions for Leganes this season.

  • _ Cat with 9 Lives _
I have to be honest that it never ceases to amaze me whenever I see Omeruo’s name in the starting line up of Leganes.
Many loan spells for some clubs in average leagues plus always in and out of the Super Eagles set up in recent seasons had all the hallmark of a player who would have by now have faded in oblivion.
But like a cat with 9 lives, Omeruo lives on and lives on with style.
There was a time when Kenneth’s Super Eagles status was in doubt but not anymore.
Playing against clubs like Atletico Madrid, Barcelona etc., the former U-17 International is here to stay. But the question remains: can he make himself one of the automatic first choice central defender in Nigeria’s back 4.
With Balogun lacking in pace and gracing the bench of Brighton week in week out in England, questions should indeed be asked of how he continues to play ahead of a Spanish La Liga defender who plays more regularly against Suarez, Courtino and Diego Costas of this world.

    • You’re right @deo. I think he’s the only squad member of the 2013 Afcon winning Super Eagles still an integral part of the team. The others, Mikel and Onazi are now on the fringes while beleaguered Victor Moses is retired.

  • Guy calm down Balogun not playing now doesn’t take anything away from him his own time will come. Omeruo at one time found it difficult to brake into the team before he took his time.

I agree with you that omeruo was once a bench warmer but right now he is playing week in week out. I get am before no be property. That Bartholomew Ogbeche USED TO dazzle doesn’t mean we should still invite him even if he is still scoring in India. We should judge performances based on the present not on the past. Thanks

Well in my opinion Omeruo should be ahead of Balogun in the pecking order until Balogun proves his mettle at Brighton.
Our central defence should be manned by the duo of Ekong/Omeruo.This two players are playing regularly against the finest strikers in the world so for that should get the nod ahead of those struggling in getting game time or getting game time in lesser leagues. This is the standard used in England and other top footballing nations. If you are not playing at club level you don’t get invite ahead of those playing. This is the standards we should adhere to if we are serious about getting to the summit.
On current form our four central defenders should be Efe Ambrose,Troost Ekong,Kenneth Omeruo and Semi Ajayi.
    God bless Nigeria!

  • I think that is for the coach to decide. water rocks his boat

  • I agree with you fulltime that Ekong should be paired with omeruo now instead of Balogun, but excluding OLA aino in four man defence is where I disagree.

Didn’t include Aina because I was on about central defence not fullbacks.
I meant four of the best Nigerian central defenders playing regularly in Europe.

  • Balogun was brought into Brighton to provide cover for Duffy, one of their best defenders who often spends time on the sidelines injured. His coach said of Balogun last week “he is pushing very hard for a starting place”.

Omeruo, yes indeed a “cat with 9 lives”. Is doing very well and was probably lucky that Athletico was missing a few of their first teamsrs (Costa missing too).

Coach will choose defenders for the next game based on what they show in training, tactics and system. From the outside looking in, I’d also pair Omeruo with Troost and have Ajayi and Balogun as subs, but what if he decides on a 3 man defence?

I also cannot see how Stephen Eze doesn’t get at the very least a standby Call instead of the local player Aniyikaye who is not playing regular football

  • Anytime you make a decision baswd on anything else other than merit based on current form , you enthrone mediocrity and you kill competition.
I don’t care how good any player was, if you are not playing weekly , you are match rusty and low in confidence and it will show in your game for the SE, little wonder why the SE always start off late in most of their games.

If the coach kept playin Omeruo in the SE when he was a club bench warmer, he would not have worked hard to improve his game.
Now that his game is improved, start him in the SE, so that Balogun will buckle up, maybe change club in the winter to where he will be getting fame time.

    Same goes for every player.
And seriously we need two more goal keepers to challenge Uzoho.
    Young Euro based keepers.

Rohr pls. Make your changes on time.
NFF tech committee pls pressure him to always make his changes on time.

Thank you CJ. You said ‘seriously, we need two more goal keepers to challenge Uzoho.’ and may l ask you to help Rohr in this regard by making any suggestion of a good standard and worthy goal keeper. Hope you will agree with me that good standard goal keepers are not easy to come by. If Uzoho didn’t come around in Russia, could you imagine what embarrassment would have confronted us. Again, if any one knows any GOAL KEEPER better than him, name the goal keeper and lets focus watching to see how he is doing. In the mean time, lets nurture Uzoho (20) until he leads us to the promise land.

  • One good thing about the Super eagles post world cup is the fact that only 3 of the 23 man squad have not played some part in their club’s matches in the month of October. Those three are Balogun, Ezenwa and Aniyikanye.

All the others have played some part and quite often full matches for their clubs in the recent fixtures. Even Awaziem who is usually on the bench got a full match for Porto in their last Copa Del Rey match where he is reported to have played a very good game.

It shows that Nigeria is no longer a team of bench warmers.

Idowu, Omeruo, Aina, Uzoho, Troost, Etebo, Agu, Musa, Moses Simon, Osimhen,Kalu, Onyekuru have all made very good moves last summer. Add on Success and Chukwueze who have broken into their first teams this season and we have a very good forward movement for Super Eagles players.

I think Kenneth should be ahead of Balogun in the pecking order based on merit. Although not many coaches will change a winning team. However, the Laliga remains the best league in the world. Therefore, any player playing week in week out in such league should be a starter for the SuperEagles.

  • I think omeruo should be given the chance ahead of Bqlogun for now and that can still be change later but for now,the guy is playing wella..up eagles
