–Reveals striker’s snub in 2002 World Cup

Former Nigeria manager, Chief Adegboye Onigbinde has heaped plaudits on Nigeria striker, Yakubu Aiyebeni, who completed a deadline-day transfer move from Qatari club, Al-Rayyan to Reading of England.

“It’s a good move for Yakubu, English league has always been a good league so I believe it’s nice for Yakubu to return to England”, Onigbinde said.

Onigbinde further posited that the ‘Yak’ as he is fondly called, must have been in good form to have continued to attract transfers in the past decade.

“If a player moves, it means the coach at the new club must have seen something good in him that will benefit his team so like I said earlier, it’s a good move for him.

“I came close to Yakubu (Aiyegbeni) in 2002 during the preparation for the Korea/Japan World Cup. Some players I invited to camp did not turn up and Yakubu happened to be one of them but he did not make the squad.”

The 32-year-old Aiyegbeni with 57 caps and 21 goals for Nigeria moved from Chinese side, Guanghou R&F to Al-Rayyan before his latest return to England where he joined Championship side, Reading for the rest of the season.
