Onigbinde: I’m Proud Of Home Eagles

–Former national team manager says it’s a new beginning for Nigeria

Former Nigeria Manager, Adegboye Onigbinde has expressed happiness over the performance of the country’s second string senior national team, Super Eagles duringSunday night’s international friendly against Elephants of Ivory coast in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, UAE.

Onigbinde said though the Nigerian team entirely made up of domestic league players lost the game 1-0, their performance in the game was a clear proof that given the attention and recognition, players from the domestic league could stand up to be counted, saying he was proud of their performance.

“I was not at home to watch the match, but reports suggest that the boys did well and I’m very happy about that”, starts the Modakeke High Chief who led the then Green Eagles to a silver medal finish in the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

“Even though they lost the game 1-0, for a team so hurriedly assembled, a team that spent not more than a week in camp to hold the star-studded Ivory Coast side means the Nigerian team did well.

“And this is what I’ve continued to say all along that we have players on the home front, what they need is the exposure and time to blossom.

“We’ve the players here and they proved that the domestic league has quality irrespective of the negative attributes being ascribed to it. So I can say these boys have presented a good publicity to themselves and the league and I’m proud of this”.

The Super Eagles will confront Sudan on Friday in Abu Dhabi in their second but last match of their trip to that Asian country and Onigbinde reasons that there’s still room for better performance.

“I think it’s a new beginning for Nigeria football, they have started well despite the defeat but they can still improve and do much better in the coming game.

“With regular games, such as this, yes, they will continue to do better. It’s a new beginning and I believe they improve in the coming games”, the former Shooting Stars Sports Club, 3SC of Ibadan General Manager posited.
