Home-based Super Eagles midfielder, Paul Onobi believes a positive outing at the African Nations Championship in Rwanda will give more opportunities to the Nigerian league players to stake claims for shirts in the main Super Eagles side, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
Overseas based stars have in recent past dominated the Super Eagles squad with successive coaches preferring them to the home-based players.
Current handler of the side, Sunday Oliseh recently started three home-based players in Nigeria's 2018 World Cup qualifying game against Swaziland, with Onobi who plays for Glo Premier League side, Sunshine Stars prefered in midfield ahead of Chelsea star, John Obi Mikel.
Onobi who is expected to play a key role for the Eagles who booked their place in the 2016 CHAN after a 2-0 aggregate win against Burkina Faso expected the number to increase especially if they can go far in Rwanda.
"Playing in the CHAN is a big opportunity for us to prove what we are capable," Onobi told Completesportsnigeria.com.
"It was nice to start the game against Swaziland with two of my colleagues in the starting line-up.
"Who knows what will happen if we do well in the competition."
Samson Siasia's men will start their campaign at the compeition against Nigeria on January 18.
