Orban commits to Hungary

RB Leipzig captain Willi Orban has ended speculation over his international future by accepting an invitation to play for Hungary. The 25-year-old was born in Kaiserslautern to a Hungarian father and Polish mother and he played twice for the Germany Under-21 side back in 2014.

The defender had previously suggested that his preference was to feature for Germany, telling Bavarian paper Munchner Merkur last year: “I’m not ruling anything out. The German national team would definitely be my first choice.

“With Hungary or Poland, my chance would probably come along quicker, but I’m not really the type of person, who just chooses the simplest path.”

However, it seems as though he has thrown his lot in with Hungary and could now make his international debut later this month in the UEFA Nations League.

RB Leipzig tweeted: “Congratulations Willi #Orban on your call-up to the Hungary national team! Our captain will now be a team-mate of Peter #Gulacsi for both club and country.”
