Super Falcons forward, Asisat Oshoala, was one of the standout performers but couldn’t prevent Arsenal Ladies from losing 1-0 to Manchester City Ladies in the semi-final of the FA Women’s Continental Cup.
The only goal of the game was scored by Jennifer Beattie against the run of play with less than 15 minutes left.
Manchester City Ladies will now face Birmingham City Ladies in the final which comes up on Friday, 30 September.
Birmingham City Ladies thrashed London Bees 4-0 in the first semi-final on Saturday.
Oshoala went close for Arsenal Ladies on 22 minutes when she seized on an under-hit pass back but City’s Marie Hourihan quickly rushed out of her line to collect the ball.
Three minutes later, Oshoala charged through on goal but sent her shot just wide of the target.
Danielle Donk almost gave Arsenal Ladies the lead in the 31st minute, after bringing the ball down in the area only to fire over the bar from close range.
Arsenal Ladies were forced to an early change on 44 minutes as Donk was replaced by Vicky Losada following her head collision with City’s Jennifer Beattie.
Early in the second half, Oshoala hit a shot from 25-yard which was saved.
In the 55th minute, City’s skipper Steph Houghton went close but skied her shot over the bar.
Houghton made a timely intervention for City on 70 minute as she cleared away a dangerous cross, preventing Oshoala from pouncing.
Oshoala continued probing for the opening goal and almost gave Arsenal Ladies on 75 minutes but her shot was parried away by Hourihan.
City finally broke the deadlock through Beattie in the 79th minute to put City Ladies 1-0 up.
With five minutes left, Houghton made a goal line clearance to prevent Kelly Smith from equalising for Arsenal Ladies.
