By James Agberebi:

Former Lagos State Commisssioner for Youth and Sports and Chairman, Local Organizing Committee of fourth International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Challenge Nigeria Open, Waheed Enitan Oshodi, believes tournaments like the Nigeria Open will benefit raw talents and local coaches in the country, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

The fourth edition of the ITTF Challenge Nigeria Open started on Wednesday inside the Molade-Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

In a chat with Completesportsnigeria.com, Oshodi stated that this year's edition will be the best compared to previous tournaments.

"The important thing is that we try to look after the Nigerian players," Oshodi told Completesportsnigeria.com. "But we must give them something to aspire to and you must play against the best to be come the best.

"We've seen it with Aruna Quadri, we've seen it with Funke Oshonaike and I believe we have the talent to do a lot more of that and I believe where we can get this talents is to organise big tournaments like this.

"Aside from Lagos, there are other states doing well in grassroots development. But for the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation, this has to be the way to go and it is about getting the best players to test our players to see how they are doing.

"This also gives our coaches the opportunity to see the latest tactics and it is the same thing for other coaches coming from other countries. I think this year's tournament will be the best so far."

On Tuesday, the seedings for both the men's and women's singles were made with Nigerian stars Aruna Quadri and Funke Oshonaike seeded number one and six in the men and women categories respectively.
