Ostapenko Frustrated With Hong Kong Exit

Jelena Ostapenko felt she was the architect of her own downfall after losing to Kristina Kucova at the Hong Kong Open. Ostapenko, who won the 2017 French Open, was facing a player ranked 299 places below her and who had not been in the main draw of a WTA event for more than a year.

However, the world number 18 succumbed in three sets in the Far East, with a farcical finish to the match.

A shot by Kucova was called in – even though it appeared to land well beyond the baseline – but with Ostapenko out of challenges, there was nothing the Latvian could do and she went down 7-5 3-6 2-6.

“In tennis sometimes one ball can decide the whole match. That ball was quite far out. I was surprised the chair umpire didn’t call it,” she said. “But unfortunately I had run out of challenges and couldn’t do anything.”

The 21-year-old felt her opponent played well above herself although it was her own wayward shots that made the difference.

“Today she was playing at a very high level but of course it was not the best match and I made a lot of unforced errors,” she added.
