–Set up final clash with Heartland
Papilo Football Academy has qualified for the final of Imo State FA Cup after 7-6 (penalty kicks) win over Baton FC, also of Owerri on Wednesday.
Papilo Academy, founded six years ago by former Super Eagles captain, Nwankwo Kanu edged past Baton FC in a semi final clash decided at Dan Anyiam Stadium, setting up a final clash with Heartland FC at same venue on Sunday.
Both teams had settled for 1-1 full time scoreline but a winner had to emerge from the spots.
It’s the first time the Football Academy will reach the FA Cup final. Win or lose in Sunday’s State FA Cup final, Papilo Football Academy FC has qualified to fly the state’s flag in the national Federation Cup this year.
Expressing happiness that the youngsters were able to go past the Nigeria Nationwide League team in the semi final, Nwankwo Kanu said he was driven by the desire to promote grassroot football in floating the academy.
“We have a lot of talents out there in the hinterlands, we need to give them opportunity and help the develop their talents. That’s why we set up the Papilo Academy and I’m happy this is paying dividends as we have produced the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho and Kelechi Nwakali”, Kanu told Complete Sports.
