Peter Rufai: These Eagles Are Becoming Super

Let me say big congratulations to the Super Eagles and indeed all Nigerians. The team made us happy on Saturday, beating Bosnia 1-0 in their World Cup group F second match. By that singular feat, the Super Eagles have whetted our World Cup round of 16 appetite.

Yes, we can now have hope of further progress in the championship, just with one more river to cross, the Argentine sea, we now have hope of getting there. That’s how far they have convinced me with their vastly improved game on Saturday. Against Bosnia, we saw a brand new Super Eagles, a team driven by commitment, hunger, desire and passion for victory. It all had to be a performance well above their first match showing against Iran and one can say more is yet to come from these Stephen Keshi boys. That’s how super the team has become. For once, we saw a team whose attackers were always falling back to help midfielders, as Emmanuel Emenike was doing coming back to make blocks and interceptions.

We saw Osaze fall back to raise the midfielders number and build attack from there too. The same goes for Babatunde Michael and in the process our defenders were at liberty to outnumber, outclass and outmuscle the Bosnian attackers in the final third.

Yobo carried out his role more effectively than even anticipated. He was a leader, always yelling out orders to his teammates and it’s not too often you get this in a team. You could be a good player, doing your best on the field but getting to effectively control and command your teammates positively on the pitch is an added responsibility and Yobo did the two so well against Bosnia.

Ahmed Musa may not have connected well Emmanuel Emenike’s cross(es) on the few times it(they) came. But his pace as well as that of Emenike were too handful for Bosnia and their defenders, for fear of the duo’s pace could not pour out deep into the Eagles area. On the few occasions they succeeded in getting access behind the Eagles back-line, Vincent Enyeama proved his worth and rating. For once, I saw the real qualities of Nigerian physicality in Eagles, they bulldozed and out muscled their opponents and showed hunger for goals and victory.

These are the qualities that have over time been lacking in the team. We can only expect them to keep it up and even improve on it. If they stick to this form and performance, there will be absolutely nothing to be worried about Argentina on Wednesday.
