Pique Tennis Change Is Approved

Barcelona football star Gerard Pique is continuing to have a major influence in his second sport, Tennis.

The World Cup winner is part of an investment group that is ploughing money into the historic men’s team event, the Davis Cup.

The 118-year-old tournament now looks set to receive a big shake-up, after Pique’s idea to make it a week-long event was accepted by the powers that be.

After playing 45 minutes of Barcelona’s pre-season clash with Boca Juniors at the Nou Camp, the 31 year-old flew off to America to put forward his plans for the Davis Cup to the International Tennis Federation.

Pique spoke to the 120-person panel in Orlando and persuaded 71 per cent of the delegates that the revamp was a good idea and he feels it will safeguard the future of the competition.

The former Spanish international said: “Obviously it’s a very big change, one of the biggest changes in the history of Davis Cup. That’s why I understand the people who can doubt.

“To the ones that voted against we’ll try to prove that we can deliver the greatest Davis Cup competition ever.”

The current Davis Cup format is a knockout event played February, July, September and November, but the change in format is aimed at helping the top players feature in an already hectic schedule.

The reform will create November finals with 18 teams: 12 winners from 24-team home and away qualifying ties in February, the previous year’s four semi-finalists and two wild-card nations.
