Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial scored for Manchester United who defeated Everton 2-1 in Sunday’s English Premier League clash at Old Trafford.
United were looking to bounce back after their 1-0 loss at home to Juventus in the Champions League in midweek, and Pogba eased any tension at Old Trafford by converting the rebound after his 27th-minute penalty had been saved.
The French midfielder turned provider four minutes after the interval for Anthony Martial to curl in a wonderful effort from the edge of the area. The goal was Martial’s fourth goal in three league games.
Manchester United’s display was far from compelling and Everton were gifted a lifeline through Gylfi Sigurdsson’s spot-kick after 77 minutes, but United held on to move above the Toffees and up to eighth in the Premier League table.
Everton have now been beaten 36 times in the Premier League by Manchester United – a competition record for a single club against one opposition – and they are winless in their past 19 games against the established top six.
Manchester United are now nine points behind league leaders Liverpool.
Manchester United travel to the south coast to face Bournemouth next Saturday, while Everton are at home against Brighton on the same day.
