POLAND VS NIGERIA: 22 Players In Camp As Eagles Start Training; Mikel, Etebo, Ajayi Out

The Super Eagles’ Radisson Blu Hotel camp in Wroclaw has been bubbling with the arrival of 22 players and the beginning of training sessions on Tuesday, the Nigeria Football Federation announced in a press release on Tuesday.

Technical and backroom staff, alongside six players opened the camp on Monday, and they were joined by goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, defenders Kenneth Omeruo, Elderson Echiejile, Stephen Eze, Abdullahi Shehu and Chidozie Awaziem, midfielders Joel Obi, John Ogu, Ogenyi Onazi, Uche Agbo and Wilfred Ndidi, and forwards Ahmed Musa, Moses Simon, Odion Ighalo, Kelechi Iheanacho and Victor Moses on Tuesday.

Enyimba goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa and South Africa-based Daniel Akpeyi are expected on Wednesday.

Captain Mikel Obi is unlikely to make it to Wroclaw as he has been working hard at renewing his work permit in China, where he plays for Tianjin Teda. Team Administrator Dayo Enebi Achor told thenff.com on Tuesday: “We all had been hoping that the renewal would come in good time for him to fly to Poland. As it is now, it is not likely that he would make the trip.”

Las Palmas midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo is injured, and Al Ahly forward Junior Ajayi, who was unable to secure visa into Poland, will fly directly to London for Tuesday’s clash with Serbia at The Hive.

The team trained twice on Tuesday, with the same schedule for Wednesday, before Thursday’s training at match time inside the Municipal Stadium in Wroclaw. The match kicks off at 8.45pm (Nigeria and Poland are on same time zone) on Friday.

After Tuesday’s game with Serbia in London, the three-time African champions will play a send-off match against the Democratic Republic of Congo in Nigeria, before flying back to London for a high-profile clash England’s Three Lions at Wembley on 2nd June.

Four days later, the Super Eagles face Czech Republic at their final training camp in Austria, and another friendly game is on the cards before the squad jets out to the World Cup finals on 11th June.

Nigeria’s team base camp at the 21st FIFA World Cup finals is located in Yessentuki, Stavropol territory in the southern region of the Russian Federation.

The Super Eagles will face Croatia, Iceland and Argentina at the group phase of the World Cup.

  • Problem dey ooo. But Mikel not in the team will help other players like Joel Obi to stake a spot in the team. I just hope Mikel will make it to Serbia game like Ajayi. I knew something was up for not seeing etebor in Las Palmas starting line up.#soareagles

  • Gabriel mozie 4 years ago

ha am not happy at all about this Mikel issue I must confess and Etebo ha home the injury is not all that bad because we can’t afford to loss that machine

  • Cherechi 4 years ago

I think all those who claimed that VM will not honor this invitation will now keep their mouth shut. Its only in Nigeria we see and say negative things about ourselves even when we are trying to make people happy

  • Don’t mind them @ Cherechi u know Nigerian can not satisfy

  • Letter to Joel people’s choice Obi,
We all wanted u around and NOW! U are here and Mikel..another Obi is absent..
I think God is trying to prove something here.

So this is how to prep for WC? With these last minute withdrawals? Even Mikel. Details of this match have been released for over s month, yet our players don’t know they would need passports n visas for the match. Even if Ajayi’s case is understandable perhaps bocs his invitation came a bit late, and he might have the premonition that he would be invited, what of Mikel, our captain? He, of all people should know that if no one was invited, not him. And he didn’t deem it fit to address the issue of his travelling docs on time. I’m sure, there would still be issues come Serbia game. Still waiting for the excuse Moses would put up. I hope we are not digging our pit of failure even before the kickoff.

  • Nigeria will win the world cup

  • Nigeria will not make it out of the group

  • Nigeria will get to the first round

  • Nigeria will make it to the quarter finals

  • Nigeria will make it to the semifinals

  • Nigeria will make it to the finals

  • one of my predictions will come thru

  • Emmy-Baz 4 years ago

why is it that people are always tackling Moses as if he was a Balotelli… what excuse are you waiting for again from a man that is presently in camp?

  • So bad for the SE,
MIKEL and Etebor absent at the same time.
Joel obi does not play #10.
He plays #8 just like Onazi.
This will either require a change of pattern or Iheanacho finally assuming #10 , which I have always believed is his best natural position in the attack.
    We shall see.
    Good luck SE.

I believe Joel Obi can easily anchor the midfield in the absence of Mikel if fully fit because Joel is more of an attacking midfielder than a defensive midfielder, so with Ndidi and Ogu or Onazi playing as the double PIVOT behind Joel, it will allow him to move around more with the ball linking the forwards. Good luck Eagles.

This is a prep game to try different formations and tactics. It’s not a do or die affair. Let’s all relax. As for those complaining about Mikel not making it. It’s no fault of his. You cannot renew your work permit before the due date and the process is in most cases not fast tracked by the issuing authorities except in truly exceptional circumstances. We know what Mikel can do. Let’s see Joel Obi in action.

    • am disappointed in mikel captain for that matter look the excuse his giving shame on him

      • Sam O. 4 years ago

Y shame on him, which excuse did he give? Many of us make comments on issues we av little of no knowledge of, work permit is not Visa,it’s not passport, it can’t be fast-tracked until it’s due for renewal. So what’s Mikel fault here.

    • Excellent response. Most Nigerians are not exposed but will just be complaining on social media unnecessarily. There are due processes. Mikel is struck in China bc of the need to renew his work permit which has just expired. Do you expect him to travel out of China without renewing his paper then how will he return back to his base after the matches. These are the same bunch of people shouting that Argentina will roast Nigeria last year and immediately after the match will turn to reverse gear.
Relax and careful watch the World Cup preparation matches which will be used to effectively blend the team. Other players need to be checked out as well to ascertain their level of fitness and readiness to perform at the greatest level.

  • Let us all keep our cool and keep our head held high for the coach and super eagles to give us a scintillating preparatory world cup games. I can see every thing turnaround in the approach of our players, coaching crews and generally and I bet you we will all see wonderful display from our SE will a turnaround result after the matches. Go Nigeria! Go Super Eagles!!

I grateful to GOD that Jeol Obi is back to the super eagles please fight for your no.1jersey I love you Jeol Obi

  • adeluks007. 4 years ago

Austin Ejide(Gk) ought to have been given a chance to @ least prove himself, so also Egwuekwe, Aaron samuel, Isaac success & Efe Ambrose to feature in the friendlies & If they are not convincing be dropped rather than outright snub by Rohr in these friendlies to create options in the goal keeping, Defence & Midfield.

  • Omotayo Maraiyesa 4 years ago

Samuel Kalu is very good for the Super eagles at this present time for the World Cup 2018.

  • Samuel victor 4 years ago

What makes u think after inviting kalu he wnt bring DAT naija attitude to d camp, bros kalu dey learn for where the two moses dey biko

  • @ Abdul andah…u are referring to an eagle with d highest number of goals in d qualifiers. Wonder y u forgot about Cameroonian match so soon.
@Cj…Joel obi plays 4,8, 10, even from the wings. And I wonder what u see in Mikel when u notice Indidi and Onazi behind him and he scores more goals for Nigeria than before. Yet, u call that 10?
@Adeluks007… So..someone in this modern age can still be clamouring for Egwekwe? To come and bench who? Balogun, Ekong, Omeruo,Awaziem or who?
    …Abeg leave Rohr..he knows best.

  • Abdul andah 4 years ago

    @sean: read my comment again.
Am actually talking about friendly matches Nigeria played with Cameroon in Brussels (Belgium).
Highest goal scorer with how many goals? Moses of then is not moses of now o, he can’t even make a simple cross now nor dribble well.

  • i am extremely happy that mikel wont be in this match.joel obi is a man i have always looked out for in nigeria midfield.if you are a footballer, you wshould have known that the problem of supereagles football is mikel despite his unpredictable periodic displays.mikel obi makes nigerian strikers look poor.he never ever pushes attack.his position is supposed to be attacking mildfielder but how much of this attack does he make.football is a game of time.one single pass and a run from the midfield can change a match in seconds.joel obi is a skillfull, mobile and attackminded mildfielder that pushes attack unlike mikel obi that always feels like dribbling even his coach watching him from the outside.watch out for joel obi on friday and u will see that God has a plan for turnaround in supereagles.

  • God bless u @tunde.

  • The match will be shown at where pls

  • Kalu dey learn from where de two moses dey abeg

  • Ojo Samuel 4 years ago

Lol… Some Nigerians are just so funny… Imagine someone clamouring for egukwekwe… Na ur pickin!
Abeg why all the rant on moses! Abeg leave the guy make him focus on games… He Don try for us… I believe say he go pick form soon… Na Conte was use him tire…he has almost changed him mentally into a defender… Moses now defends more than attack!

As for my captain… Make una leave am now… Work permit different from visa… Nigerians forget sacrifices too soon… Guy wey sacrifice hin chelsea career for Olympic… Wey dey sponsor players from hin pocket… Pls he is doing well

And for me,,, Mikel better Joel cos talking about assists and creativity… Mikel has improved and unless Joel take his chances now,,, I don’t see why he is being hyped

And as the akpeyi wey dey step on the gas…. I reserve my comment!

  • prince 4 years ago

Am happy for eagles manager but he should try to invite more of our players that play well across the world so that super eagle will be like the eagle squad of Atlanta 1998

  • @Sean,
MIKEL has always been a management #10 since his encounter with Chelsea.
It is because of lack of options that WE play him at #10, and laziness on our coaches to discover or future another person or talent for that position.
MIKEL should normally play #4 for SE.
I would have loved to see Etebor or Iheanacho play that role in the match against Poland.
Anyway Friday is next tomorrow, so we shall see.

    • King Divine 4 years ago

You obviously dont know much about football especially tactics and positioning. I hope you saw etebo against south africa. I hope you know the exact position he is playing for his present club. Onazi playing 8 or 10? Like seriously?
Tell me one midfielder who has contributed more attackwise for the super eagles. Just name one. Name one nigerian midfielder that has a better passing accuracy as Mikel Obi. Do we even have an heir to the number 10 role if Mikel leaves? The only competitive game Nigeria played without mikel under gernat rohr we lost and you are telling us he should go play 4. Nigerians sha!

  • prince 4 years ago

I dream of this hertha Berlin defender Jordan eagles coach should try and invite that he is willing to play for eagles not Germany

  • Israel Akharume 4 years ago

Thank God for Joel obi that is back to the super eagles l pray for you to maintain your position in the team is your opportunity to cease the moment

  • Cherechi 4 years ago

Our internet coaches, make una apply for national teams jobs na,imagine someone insulting our humble captain. Can you run 50mins without stopping or talking water?

  • @cj iheanacho is not a 10,he is a second striker he will fumble.

  • As a 10

  • Mikel’s absence has afforded the coaching crew and the nigerian fans to see what Joel Obi can bring to the team. I hope he takes it with both hands. I hope he gels quickly with the team, stay fit as well cuz I believe He will bring an added advantage to the eagles midfield. Imagine a well drilled, gelled and understanding midfield combination of Ndidi (DM), Mikel (CM) and Joel (AM). That would be a delight to watch.

  • Pls let iheanacho to play 10 and ighalo to play as 9 please our coach i abeg in the name of God, iheanacho start his career as no10 play wel and almost score in every match against argentina he proved it assisted 2 and score a fk which we av been lookin for

  • That is true talk please nigerians help me beg our coach to play iheanacho as 10

  • E be like say na buhari help us beg am 4 iheanacho to play dat midfield role

  • Hope Odianosen 4 years ago

Hahahahahahahaha, dis guys wan use laff kill me ooo, Iheanacho with only one effective foot to play the NO.10 role,,,,,, u guys shuld go into commedy entertainment,,,, IHEANACHO will look very stupid and confusedl if he is played @ the central midfield, it takes technical intelligence to play the NO.10 role and Iheanacho is not close at all. Good luck Eagles.

  • Iwobi or Joel Obi can play num. 10 position

  • Mikel is a bunghole

  • my brother that guy funny, some just say whatever come there mouth, who did not watch that south Africa match abeg make una leave my namesake, we talking about accuracy passes that is midfielder for u

  • mikel is not here but I hope the can try pairing [email protected] [email protected] then [email protected] I bet you is going to be wonderful
