Portuguese Primeira Liga: Agu Confident As Portimonense Host Setubal Tonight

After seeing their fairy tale run halted by last weekend’s home loss to Benfica, Nigeria international Mikel Agu and his Vitoria de Setubal teammates are set to bounce back when they take on Portimonense in a Portuguese Primeira Liga encounter at the Estadio Portimao on Friday ( tonight) reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
A 1-0 home defeat, courtesy of a first-half goal by Brazilian forward Jonas, resulted in just the fourth loss of the season for the modest Portuguese top flight team but Agu reckons they can draw strength from the impressive manner they performed despite the loss.
The 25 year old, enjoying a profitable spell at the club since he joined on transfer deadline day on loan from parent club FC Porto said: “We lost against Benfica but you have a feeling that with a little more self-belief we could have gotten at least a point from that game. We are playing so well now that other clubs are forced to take note because we play without fear.
“So, rather than let our heads drop because we lost to Benfica, we have drawn some positives from that loss and hopefully it will help us when we face Portimonense on Friday,” Agu told CSN.
Setubal are in eigth spot in the table while Friday’s opponent Portimonense are three rungs lower in 11th position with 14 points.
In the corresponding fixture last season, Portimonense won by an emphatic 5-2 scoreline for their only victory against the Green and Whites.
Both teams have met nine times with Setubal winning five and drawing three. They’ve scored 20 goals and conceded 16 to Portimonense.
Setubal have also been good travellers this season with two wins and two draws in six games on the road.

  • Wow! The quality of Mikel Agu’s game continues to grow in leaps and bounds.

In his team’s 3:1 loss to Portimonense yesterday, Agu tried to inspire a comeback with a ferocious header that crashed into the back of the net like a rocket from a corner kick routine.

Shortly afterwards, he attempted a deceptive long range shot that needed the goalkeeper to be sharp in scrambling the effort away for a corner kick.

I am really happy to have been among the few to have kept faith with Agu. He’s always had it. He just needed to be in a place where the coach will help him build his confidence and we can see the results.

He had an overall match rating of 7.8 for the match.

      Absolutely he was phenomenal.
When a good coach features a player on regular basis despite not so popular with supporters there must be something special about that player which the coach who can view him at a closer range can see than the fans who sees from the distance.
Apparently, this was the case of this great talent on his early days with the super eagles but the coach kept faith in him and today he is proving the gaffer right by posting splendid performances at both club and internationals respectively.
