Puel: Young Iheanacho, Musa Need To Improve At Leicester

By Adeboye Amosu:

Leicester City manager Claude Puel has defended Nigeria forward Kelechi Iheanacho following recent criticisms over his performance, but has however challenged the player to improve his game, reports Completesportsnigeria. com.

Iheanacho, 21, has struggled to make an impact with the Foxes since his £25 million switch from Manchester City this summer.

The former Nigeria youth international has featured in just 11 games for Leicester City, scoring only one goal.

He missed an opportunity to impress on Tuesday night with a listless performance against his former club Manchester City in the Carabao Cup.

“He’s a young player, he needs to continue to work to improve,” Puel said in his pre-match conference ahead of Saturday’s clash with Manchester United at the King Power Stadium.

“It was important to see him, to give him game time. It was a good opportunity for him and other players.

“I was happy with the squad because it was a good level of quality on the pitch and it was a good response after our game against Crystal Palace.”

Puel has a rich list of strikers at his disposal and keeping all of them happy has been a challenge.

But the Frenchman wants them to keep a positive attitude even when they are not playing.

“Kele, like others players, like Slimani, like Musa, they are different players. It’s important for them and for the squad,” he remarked.

“We have a lot of players sometimes in the same position and it’s difficult to manage this. It’s important to keep the positive attitude, for Kele it’s the same thing.”

  • This young man is a victim of circumstances. He is kept on the bench so that Man. City can forget about the guy; remember the buy back clause during his transfer. Ihenacho we watch during Nigerian World cup qualifying is better than the two Algerians in Leicester city enjoying enough playing time.

Umana you are very correct. News writers these days are scribes not analysts. This is why they give raw report, however they make damaging impressions with their flawed conclusion.
First, Le City has many older strikers, with an England striking option, Vardy. How do you the coach to bench the English world cup option in the English League? How can Iheanacho improve when he does get to face the challenge? No player is a finished product in training only, but consistency on the pitch. With little or no play time, there is huge expectation for Iheanacho to impress, and he carries the tension unto the pitch, and the spectators have less understanding, How can he perform under this circumstance? And against his former team that knows him and out, how could have done well, as obviously he was not respected by the referee when he was held and the ball was collected from to become a goal?
He is indeed a child of circumstance, and we have to understand with him. In the SE, Iheanacho has more relaxed nerves and he plays well, but not so under Lcity ‘cos of undue tension put on him.

….It is purely a gang up against such a talent. I don’t trust PUels judgement on Ihenachos abilities and enormous talent…The same applies to Ahmed Musa. Leicester might suffer in games because of this very parochial football knowledge of Puel. I reckon the coach needs to be sent on loan to get some fresher course because he is going to ruin the club chances this season….

But Wilfred Ndidi plays regularly under Puel? I iheanacho might be getting distracted. He has the talent fine but he has to work hard to improve his brand
