Raikkonen Defends Sauber Switch

Kimi Raikkonen says he is returning to Sauber so he can focus on why he got into Formula 1 – his love for driving.

The Finn shocked many when he announced he would be going back to the team where he began his F1 career 17 years ago for the 2019 season after his current employers Ferrari decided against keeping him on.

The switch from a Scuderia team known for challenging, and winning, world titles on a consistent basis to a Swiss outfit which has never won a race in Formula 1 has left people questioning Raikkonen’s motives.

The 2007 world champion has now said that he hopes his move to Sauber will allow him just to concentrate on what he still enjoys about motorsport, claiming he is just looking to enjoy himself in what is likely to be his final year in F1. “I still like to drive, and that’s the only reason why I will continue to drive next year,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “At Sauber I can focus more on what I love – driving.”

When asked if he had any concerns about moving to Sauber, the 39-year-old said: “Why should I worry about going to Sauber? My goal is to try to help them to succeed and to have fun. “When I came back to Formula One for Lotus, people said that I had made a mistake and could not do anything, but instead things went differently. It could happen again.”
