— Asunmu, Jelks fail to reach medal zones
Blessing Okagbare on Monday night won gold in the final of the Women 100m of the Athletics event of the 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Okagbare who also came first in the semi-finals earlier Monday night ran a blistering time of 10.85 seconds which is now the Games’ record time.
Okagbare beat one of the favourites for the gold medal in this event, Veronica Campbell-Brown who ran 11.03.
However Okagbare’s compatriot, Gloria Asunmu who was a former African champion in the 100m finished a disappointing 8th with a time of 11.41.
In the Men’s final, Mark Jelks came fifth in 10.17 despite taking off pretty comfortably.
The race was won by Jamaica’s Kemar Cole who ran a time of 10.00.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s gold medalist in the 4 x 400 metres relay at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, Enefiok Udo-Obong hailed the quality and competitive nature of Okagbare.
“That was great for Nigrian athletics,” Udo-Obong told
Completesportsnigeria.com moments after the final.
“Blessing’s feat shows we make champions at home. She is a wonderful athlete and also means that we do not need to buy mercenaries to run for Nigeria.
“Gloria (Asunmu) came 8th in the final but we should encourage her because over 100 athletes ran in the competition.
“I’m not really disappointed by her finish although obviously I would have wished she finished in the medal zone,” Udo-Obong tells Completesportsnigeria.com
