Rampant! Super Eagles’ Player-By-Player Rating Vs Libya

Super Eagles mauled the MediterraneanKnights of Libya 4-0 in their 2019 AFCON qualifiers Group E Matchday-3 clash at the Akwa Ibom International Stadium Uyo on Saturday to boost their chances of qualifying for the tournament.
Completesportsnigeeia.com’s Johnny Edward here appraises the Gernot Rohr’s men player-by-player

Francis Uzoho
Elche goalkeeper Francis Uzoho made two outstanding saves to help the Super Eagles record their second win in the 2019 AFCON qualifiers Group E. 7/10

Shehu Abdullahi
Started the game brilliantly but was forced off due to a thigh injury. 6/10

Leon Balogun
Leon Balogun showed no signs of match rustiness as he posted a near perfect performance for the Super Eagles in the games against Libya. 7/10

William Troost-Ekong
The Udinese defender kept Libyan marksman, Saltou Anias quiet throughout the encounter. 7/10

Jamilu Collins
Churned out a decent performance for the Super Eagles defensively and offensively. He was rather unlucky not to have capped his official debut with a goal when he played through on goal in the 28th minute of the game. 7/10

Wilfred Ndidi
Posted a good performance for the Super Eagles providing good cover for the defence. 7/10

Oghenekaro Etebo
Oghenekaro Etebo was a more calming partner for Wilfred Ndidi in the heart of the Super Eagles midfield. The Stoke City midfielder was instrumental in the team keeping hold of the ball for the better part of the game. 7/10

Samuel Kalu
Bordeaux winger Samuel Kalu was one delight to watch in the encounter. Kalu had four successful take ons in the encounter. He capped his brilliant outing with a sublime goal. But he still needs to improve on his crosses and his finishing. 7/10

Ahmed Musa:
Relatively quiet throughout the game. He had half chances from the edge of the penalty area but failed to take advantage before he was replaced. 6/10

Alex Iwobi
Arsenal forward, Alex Iwobi showed flashes he could play in the No.10 role for the Super Eagles. Iwobi provided an assist for Ighalo’s second goal. Aside that, the 22 year old had no big influence on the game like many expected.7/10

Odion Ighalo
Odion Ighalo continued his goalscoring form for Nigeria scoring in consecutive games. The Changchun Yatai striker scored from the spot in the third minute of the encounter and added a double in the second half.
He was a thorn in the flesh of the Libyan defence. 8/10.

Henry Onyekuru: Missed chance to make it 4-0 shortly after he came on for Ahmed Musa. But he made up for that miss by providing a delightful assist for Samuel Kalu to score the fourth goal for the Super Eagles. 6/10

Ola Aina: Came on for Shehu Abdullahi who copped an injury in the early minutes of the encounter. The Torino wing back posted a decent performance in the game. 6/10

Isaac Success: The Watford striker replaced hat trick hero and man of the match, Odion Ighalo, late in the match and only played a cameo role.

l am pretty well agreed with your analysis of the entire game. l am also satisfied with the point your awarded Odion Ighalo above everyone ease. He was clinical today. Thank you.

  • Ndubest 1 year ago

I think Iwobi performed very well he deserve a higher rating. Nigeria new no 10 has emerged. Watch out for him in upcoming games he can unlock any defence as he’s been doing in Arsenal anytime he’s given opportunity. Thank you guys for making my day

  • Chima E Samuels 1 year ago

Complete sports have finished rating. Guys take your time and read goal dot com Nigeria and own goal Nigeria from the two website you will get the real rating most especially goal dot come Nigeria they just spoke the exact words that I was talking about Ighalo and Samuel Kalu let not be sway by the goals but their performance was nothing to write home about if not for the assist they got for simplified goals and Ighalo even missed a couple plus kalu’s senseless running with zero end product and poor shooting technique!

    • Nkemjikapj 1 year ago

Did you call his movements senseless running…then try to be a full back with a skillful and pacy winger running at you..If he had better end product and crossing..he would be a world beater..He absolutely terrorized the Libyan fullbacks

      • Chima E Samuels 1 year ago

He reminds me of Nnamdi the same hetherscatter run but what is their end product that is why they can’t play for top la liga or epl clubs! Football is a talent not a job I trust Igbo men and money these are my people

          China nice submission

        • Nkemjikapj 1 year ago

If you know anything about talent..you would agree samuel kalu is talented..A player of 21 that just surfaced on the scene two years ago..moving to Bordeaux from Gent and Trencin is remarkable for a player without proper football education..If I see a talented player,I would know.If he doesnt have end product..he still has time to work on it..I know of a certain musa 5 years ago who was associated with the term headless running. The ease with which samuel kalu beats his markers is a rarity in mordern football..you chima samuel cant be wiser than Rohr or Bordeaux that gave him the number 10 jersey to replace malcolm

    • Perhaps you did not watch the game my friend. Rating is a matter of individual opinion about player’s performances in a game, it can never be the same.

    • Thank you @Chima. Goal’s player rating is a more accurate, non-sentimental assessment. They were spot on, not dashing every player 7/10, and Ighalo 8/10 cos he scored a hat trick, which was 80% fashioned by Iwobi and Musa.

Apart from the 2 final tap-ins (he almost made a mess of his third), what other notable contribution did Ighalo make on the field?

Not taking credit away from Ighalo, but the tireless horse and engine of that win was Iwobi, not forgetting the back 4 (big ups to the new guy, Collins), as well as Etebo. Ighalo (despite scoring 3), technically should not get higher rating than them.

He should only rate higher than Musa and Ndidi who didn’t really come to the party in this game and the wasteful Kalu. This rating g is sentimental, emotional! But well done, Ighalo.

You must be really good at what you do for a living

  • John Cena 1 year ago

If not for the goal Samuel Kalu scored yesterday, he would have been rated poorly cos he was wasteful all through the game. He was trying to do everything all alone and his passing was not too great. I am happy that Ighalo scored a hat trick yesterday but am still not fully convinced about him. I hope he can continue to be consistent cos whether we like it or not Gernot Rohr will continue to use him as our no. 9

  • Samuel Kalu, Ighalo And Iwobi Made my Day.

Guys be fair with your comments…Note this, there is no single goal in football match that is “EASY” or “SIMPLE”…
Credit to whom credit is due… Ighalo was great in that match!!! His second goal was clinical. Please give it to the young man!!!
    God bless Nigeria

  • They I insulted and abused Ighalo for many weeks even asking for the news of his goals not to be written about.
Now they say they were being constructive in their criticisms. Bunch of fools who don’t think we know the difference between constructive criticism and destructive abuse.
If anyone thinks the quotes below are constructive, then they need their brains re-constructed.

Ighalo should go and start playing as a defensive midfielder to avoid more insults coz striking is not is thing anymore

    Larey 4 months ago
    You’re spot on.

  • CS rating of Iwobi is simply ridiculous. He was by far THE BEST AND MOST INFLUENTIAL PLAYER ON THE PITCH. His level of influence was at Mikel’s level. If he missed this match we would not have scored more than 2 goals. He should get at least a 9. If he played against Seychelles we would have won 5 nil at least. Also Ighalo is still not the answer. I believe Success will be our main man when things get tough.

  • Sunnyb 1 year ago

Chima Samuel, thanks bro you are one my main man on this forum, Ighalo scored three  cheap goals missed several easy chances, Kalu need to grow up and stop playing for the crowds, our defense was exposed many times, this team need to sit-up, strong oppositions will expose them. But I’m glad iheanacho was benched.

  • Ayphillydegreat 1 year ago

It was a good win for the SuperEagles albeit against Libya. Ighalo had a filled day against the type of defenders he faces regularly in China. However, I must commend his mentality and having known that his place is up for grabs as Nassarra is breathing down his neck. Therefore, I expect such performance from him particularly against an African minnow. I’d like to see how he perform on the road in the reverse leg and against South Africa before I can rate his performances so far.

The positives: I think Nigeria have found another top class left back in Jamilu Collins. He was very solid in defending and also gave us a dimension in attack. Nigeria’s greatest ever left backs IMHO are Celestine Babayaro and Ben Iroha. If Jamilu can be anything close to those two SuperEagles will take flight. Obviously, Ebube Duru and the Flying Eagles Capt Ikouwem Udoh looks like potential prospects especially Udoh. However, that position belongs to Collins for now until Udoh progress through the ranks.

Iwobi is SuperEagles undisputed number 10. Nobody comes from the family of the great JayJay and doesn’t play as SuperEagles playmaker. From Emma Okocha to the Legendary JayJay himself. Therefore, even with the presence of Mikel, Alexander the great should be our number 10 going forward.

I think Onyekuru will soon walk into the SuperEagles first 11. The way he holds up play to set up Kalu for the 4th goal was a touch of class. As for Kalu he’s a superb talent and it’s not by fluke to be playing regularly for Bordeaux in the Championat. He only needs to be more clinical in his decision making. I believe he will get better with experience. Many people forgot that this is still a very young SuperEagles team with an average age of 24.

Let’s see how they fare in the reverse leg on the road in Tunisia on Tuesday. We can’t afford to miss to miss out on another AFCON. #FLY LIKE AN EAGLE INTO THE FUTURE#

Ighalo was lucky. Penalty in the 3rd minute, second goal was good. He would not have scored to that third goal of he was up against a decent defence. He needed three touches to get the ball under control and in that time any decent defence would have cleared it.

Having said that, it’s about time ighalo had a real fear of losing his position. The arrival of Isaac Success meant that Odion HAD to perform.

Playing the right players in the right position showed that we have the personnel. A decent left back in left back, a decent right back in right back, Central Midfield that knows how to create chances and wingers who know they need to feed the striker.

Kalu will learn to anticipate the runs of his team mates and make passes. Until then, he and the other attackers will strike great into the opposition defence with their runs into the box, pulling them all over the place and creating space for others.

Simy Nwankwo has now been retired from the squad. Ezenwa, Bryan Idowu, Joel Obi and Iheanacho should be worried for their places.

Adding the following to the squad for the game against South Africa in November will see the squad improving further:
    Goal keeper: Afelokhai (Eyimba)
    Left back Ikouem udo
    Right back Mohammed Musa (HNKGorika)
    Defence Stephen Eze (Lokomotiv Plovdiv)
Defensive mid field Alhassan Abdullahi (National Portugal)/Uche Agbo (Standard Liege)
Attacking midfielder Eze (QPR)/Ajagun (Kortjik), Igbekeme (Real Zaragoza)
Right wing Orji Okonkwo (Bologna)/Bonaventure (Brugge)
    Striker S Odey (Zurich)

12 more to the pool of 24 squad players, in order to legislate for injury, suspensions and/or loss of form.

A pool of 36 players to choose from, competition for places in every position and a resilience that comes from playing in natural positions

With all these talents you masterfully presented above, no wonder that our able NFF president optimistically told the Nation immediately after the Libya match that Nigeria will surely win the World Cup in the near future. l bet that millions of Nigerians agreed with him. Thanks.

12 new faces in a team that’s been together for a while ans still struggling to gel…??? You guyz realy dont know how difficult it is to integrate 1 new player into a team…talk more of 12. Too many cooks they say spoil the broth. If you want to know how difficult it is to integrate players into a team, teach 10 kids a new song today, let 4 of those 10 absent themselves tomorrow and replace them with 4 new kids…then day after tomorrow let another 4 from the previous days be absent and replace them with another four……then you’ll understand why coaches cannot just start caling up every jack and harry. How many international matches do we get to play in a year to allow multiple invitations and experimentation…??? If these potential invitees arent far better than the 24 on ground, sincerely there’s not point inviting them. For the 1st time in a long while we are begining to have a consistent starting 11 in the SE and it is paying off. This indeed isn’t the right time to start throwing invitation cards all over the place

    • Dr. Drey 1 year ago

And just to add……Simy is still much very needed. I dont know why we (or G. Rohr) is reluctant to exploit that young man’s potentials to the fullest, especially his aerial and hold up abilities. We are blessed with pacy and skillful wingers. A 6ft plus striker is always a delight to have in such instances….Miroslav klose, mario mandzukic et al readily comes to mind

  • I hope they will replicate this quality when they are playing against Seychelles on 22nd.
